My 1997 2.2 4 cyl with auto trans, gmc sonoma showes a code 1870 when I read the stored codes in its computer. I have a hanes book for the truck and the book that came with the code reader and I looked on the internet and still could not find that code number. If some one knows what it is please let me know on this site. Thank you.

The 1870 code is a "transmission component slipping" code. Although it can be set by any slippage detected in the trans, the most common is the torque converter clutch. unlike Ford and Chrysler, GM doesn`t use specific codes to narrow it down. Behind a 4 cyl I`d be about positive that its the TCC thats slipping. They run a small converter. Usually it is a valve body problem. Wear in the TCC valve causes oil to cross leak out of the circuit and you get a poor TCC apply. Other things could be a hardened o-ring on the input shaft, or just a plain old burnt up converter. I run a transmission repair shop, and how I usually approach it is to recommend a complete overhaul. Unless, there isn`t much slippage then you can probably just pull the valve body, put in the upgrade kit and it might take care of it. The reason I usually steer toward rebuilding it is, I can put in a HD rev shell, HD input sprag, beef up the 3-4 clutch pack, run a carbon-metallic lined torque converter, and install the shift kit. That way I know this things gonna hang in there and not be back in a month or two with the same code and an unhappy customer. Most 4L60E`s will run from $1500-1800 from start to finish. You gotta remember, I run a $50 hr labor rate though, which is pretty low.
To me going the reman route is not a great option. Most remans are built to factory specs, and they don`t do alot of the upgrades. They`re also usually quite a bit more expensive as well. I`d take it to a reputable shop that can clear the code, drive it, watch the TCC slippage, see what they advise and go from there.
Good luck Brokenwrench

Not sure about your particular "code"

But if when it sets the code, the trans starts shifting real hard, and when looked up in the list of codes in the book, reads as the TCC slipping..... .....

A common problem on 4l60 trans under 100K miles.

Left untreated it will tear up the clutches and "BREAK" a major internal component.

If this is the case most any transmission shop will say you need the transmission replaced or rebuilt.

On mine, I did some research to repair above problem and was able to have the TCC Torque Converter Clutch valving reamed out and repaired.

Of course that was before major damage occurred from continuing to drive it anyway.

Meanwhile it's possible to clear the code, and regain normal shifting temporarily.

About a $300 fix as compared to $3K repair.

If that code has a "P" in front of it, I'm coming up with "Transmission component slipping"
