Early last summer I found a GE remote thermometer that seemed perfect for my needs. Bought the unit with 1 sensor on Ebay and then purchased 2 additional sensors from the seller separately. Put one at the front of the house, one at the back, and one in a small Tupperware container and submerged it in the pool. The theory being that, with the touch of a button, I could see the temperature in the sun, temperature in the shade, and temperature in the pool from inside the house at any time. Sounded great. The reality was that the sensor in the pool (about 15 feet from the house)couldn't transmit far enough, and the other two wore out in just a few months. Not the batteries. Anybody know of something similar, but better quality?

I too have been using units from Oregon Scientific with very good results. I have the basic model with 3 remotes for the same reasons you mentioned. I think the longest distance I am covering with one of the remotes is in the neighborhood of 70 feet. I do notice that sometimes one of the remotes will blank out, but it always returns in a short period of time. I assume this is due to RF interference, not a quality issue. These units have been in service for 4 years now and are very handy when deciding how to dress for the day. As a side note... I haven't checked lately but the units sold by Radio Shack were made by Oregon Scientific, and maybe they still are.

Mrs and I went on an REA sponsored power plant trip this summer. We won a remote thermometer playing a wariety of games on the bus on the way home. Everyone thought it was funny when I asked our host if the thermometer was oral or rectal.

I've been using remote sensors from Oregon Scientific for three years now - with zero problems. I've got two different models - both have remote temp and atomic time from Colorado, but one also have extra features, e.g. atmoshephric pressure. I have a sensor outside that is forty feet away, and another sensor in my barn that is 90' away with two walls the signal must pass through. They have worked flawlessly - and battery life is at least a year. I think I've replaced them twice in three years. I'm sure, the reality is - all this crap is made in China. You just have to find the "good" crap.
Also, pay atttention to how low they read. First one I bought only goes down to minus 20F. Since we get down to 30 below - I wanted to know it when it happens - so I "upgraded" to a different model.
