Removing Old Bolts From Hardwood??

I have some old (1940"s) hardwood stringers from a haywagon that have 1/2" bolts going through them. These bolts are firmly stuck. The bolt heads have been cut off leaving the threaded end exposed. I have tried pounding them out with a 5 pound hammer and a punch with no success. The bolts move grudgingly and you end up mushrooming the end of the bolt making the job impossible. I have also tried pulling them out using the exposed threads by tightening the nut on a stack of washers using an impact wrench. I broke one of the bolts off on my first attempt. On the second attempt I stripped the threads.

I would like to get these bolts out and reuse the holes for attaching a new hay rack. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

If worse comes to worse, I will just cut the darn things off flush and drill new holes a couple of inches away, but I hate to think that there isn"t a better way.

Have you tried an air hammer ? These are alot better than a reg. hammer.

Thank you all for your replies. I am going to try a couple at a time and see how I make out. This is a winter fill in project that I really should get back to sooner rather than later. I will let you all know how I make out.

Too bad the bolt heads have been cut off. If any are still left, weld a nut on the threaded end and use two box end wrenches, one on the nut and one on the head. Try turning both one way and then back. I think you will eventualy loosen the bolt. Then cut off the head and drive the bolt out the threaded side.

The best way I have found is to protect the wood with a heat shield and then heat the bolts (or nails)with a torch. The heat will go down the metal and burn the rusty wood. The embedded length will dictate if you need to heat and then heat again.

u could try drilling them out slightly smaller then punching out the rest with hammer and punch...tough job though probably on hay wagon stringers probably at least 6" !!!

Instead of cutting them flush and drilling new holes 2" away, just cut off flush and drill out the bolts. Punch in the center and go at it. Just make sure you are straight on if you use a hand drill . Drill press would be best. If they are badly rusted, as has been mentioned, you may be able to drill them to 7/16 and have what's left fall out.

You didn't mention how thick the boards are, but you could try using a hole saw with an I.D. just slightly larger than the 1/2" bolt diameter.

You do not need the pilot drill in the center of the hole saw, as the old bolt will help keep the hole saw centered around the bolt.

Hole saws have a limited depth of cut, but you could work from both sides if the stock is not thicker than twice the hole saw's depth capacity.

Of course, the resulting hole will be larger than 1/2", so if that is unacceptable, disregard this suggestion.

Around these bolts must be the proper releaser.Someone here already is tired of saying to break the tannic acid connection use x but I don"t know what that is. I used everything i had.Getting the nuts off required be go further.I had many Jacobs chucks. Took a really worn one and welded something to fit a 1/2" elect impact.able to go foward reverve and eventually break seal and run them out.

Well if the boards are oak what has happened is the acid from the oak has made them ruff and then the oak sort of swells to fill in the ruff areas. You might be able to oil the boards good and then get them out.
