Have to butt weld 1/2" re-rods. What is the best rods to use. I tried 6011 and have trouble with them cracking.

Hi Mike, Some re-bar is just plain junk metal. Some times it helps to heat them chery red in propane, wood fire (don't get them in the coals or you'll add carbon), etc let them cool then weld. You might try lap joint weld with a weave as a butt weld on the good stuff is hard to make sometimes. I'm pretty sure code doesn't allow for butt joint welds on use in concrete, just for info. Your tomatoes won't know the difference:)

Mike, i hope i am correct in stating this, or you might wait for some of the real rod burners to correct it. reinforcing rod can be purchased in two types: graded (weldable) and nongraded (not weldable). if i recall correctly one basic difference is carbon content, the graded is also more bendable in cold weather without breaking. not to comment on what you're doing, but i think most rebar is lapped by 15 diameters and tied or welded for concrete work. i try not to use it in fabrication projects because it is not as strong as cold rolled or hot rolled.

Using them for tomatoe stakes. I have a lot of short peices to use up. So strength is not important, but I welded some with 6011 and some cracked. Just thought someone may have a better idea.

Have you tried stainless steel rods like 308-16?
