A wire from the battery side of the starter switch or solenoid goes to one post of the ammeter.

The wire from the "BATT" terminal on the cutout or voltage regulator and ALL electrical loads connect to the ammeter's other post.

If the ammeter reads backwards, swap the connections between the posts.

I don't know what you are working with, but Bob Melville, over on the Farmall Board, has graciously made available a series of wiring diagrams for various IH tractors with original generator systems AND 12-Volt alternator conversions.

No matter WHAT old machine you are working with, one of his diagrams will probably be darned close to what you need. Have a look!

The wireing given by Bob reads only the amps going to the battery. If you put all the load on the side comeing from the hot post it will read all the generator output, load and battery charge.

Im not sure I followed/understood your post but will add the ONLY way for the ammeter to accurately register the NET current flow into (charging) or out of (discharging) the batetry is to attach ONLY the hot ungrounded battery/starter feed (usually via big battery cable connection on starter switch/solenoid) to the ammeters SUPPLY side terminal and BOTH the gennys output (BAT terminal on VR) and alllll lllll loads over on the other LOAD side terminal..... ..PERIOD..... .... but notwithstanding on 4 pole VR's that have the 4th extra LOAD terminal the loads like lights n ignition are wired there instead of the ammeters Load side terminal, but the effects still basically the same since the genny/VR and its LOAD terminal is still on the ammetrs load side while the ONLY wire on its hot supply side is from the battery/starter

I guess I basically agree with Bob and dont recall any of Bob M's diagrams to be incorrect??

KIDBOB,

The method I posted is the "industry standard", not some screwball idea of mine. (I have enough of those, as it is!)

Virtually every vehicle or machine equipped with a standard ammeter from the factory is wired that way.

Why do you want to be "different"?

The ammeter reads net gain or loss of current to/from the battery, which is what most folks are concerned about.
