My Brush Hog has 4 cracks around the gear box bracket and I'm wondering what welding rod # and size and how many amps should I use to weld this the steel is 1/4 inch by 2inch and the crack is about 1/4 to 1/2 inch long and I have a Lincoln 225amp AC welder and is any one aware of a recommendation chart for selecting the right amps will 6011 rod work ok and what size thanks for help this is the first real welding job with this welder

I am doing a weld build up on a CD4MCu pump case using dulex SS electrode E2553-16. Having some problems. Anyone have experience with duplex SMAW ??

Rod, the 6011 would probably work fine. My personal choice in this situation would be to use 7018 AC, but use what you have. Practice on some scrap first. For 1/8 rod start at 120-125 amps and get the feel for it. Every machine is different. Have fun!

If you use 7018 be sure to get a rod made for AC.

You need to wire brush the paint off of the crack first. Second, you need to drill a hole at each end of the crack. This is the best way to stop the crack. Third, you need to grind a V into the crack with a grinder. Fourth, I would use a 7018 at about 130 or 145 amps to weld the crack with. This should fix your problem.
