1994 dodge caravan 3.3L. what would cause the fuel pump to get intermidiate power only at start up??. when the van starts it will run fine all day. this has happen 4 times within the last 4 months. the van has been starting and running fine for the last month. my wife got stranded a week ago when the fuel pump would not turn on. i had it towed home and pulled the fuel pump out of the tank for the 5th time. fuel pump tested ok. put it all back together and now the van will start and run fine. i hooked up a test light to the pump wire harness with the wire unplugged. it seems i am getting intermidiate power to the fuel pump plug. when it died last time i was getting the intermidiate 3 seconds of power back to pump, but the pump would still not kick on. thats why i had it towed and pulled the tank again. all symptoms lead to a bad fuel pump. but when it starts i could drive acrosss state without any hesitation. the promblom acures only at start up. in the past i have worked in 3 different service garage's growing up over a 12 year span , and worked with alot of great mechanics that showed me the ropes. i could tear down the van and put it back together with no promblom, but this fuel promblom has me stumped. maybe im just over thinkin here.. update: i have tryed smacking the tank with a rubber malet. it doesent do anything. i bench test the pump with direst power and it works every time. when i turn the key to the on position you are supposed to hear 2 clicks from the relays. but it only makes one click when it wont start. i tryed changing the relay and it does the same. if i get lucky and keep turning the key on and of untill i hear the 2 clicks then it will start. but for a hole day i tryed it and all i got was the one click from the relays. i would come out the next day turn the key on and i would hear the 2 clicks and the van would start and drive for another week or up to a month. then out of the blue it would act up again with a no start and one click from the relays.

When you are checking for power, are you cranking the engine ? There is a 3-5 sec pump on time , then ASD relay shuts off unless ECM sees rpm signal from dist . ASD or Fuel pump relays do fail .Also be sure to verify good ground connections. Have checked to see if there are any trouble codes stored in Ecm ? Aint fuel pumps just a load of fun!!!!!
Had this with my 1987 caravan with 3 lt. engine. First time around, after you pull the tank, the sock was loaded with dirt. Two months later I pulled the tank when the original pump with 120k on it took a poop. Next was about four months later when the replacement pump would not put out enough pressure. After about $130 worth of new OEM Dodge pump I got it fixed! Next the fuel gauge sensor went!!!!! While you have the tank down just replace everything if you have some miles on it.
Relays can give you all kinds of trouble and a lot of people do not know what dielectric grease is for! A little dab on the connections can stop so much trouble! Some cars have a rail pressure switch too. Good luck. Jeffcat

also, PLEASE tell me you used a factory pump and not an airtex. there has been MANY issues with that brand of pump.

you need to look at the asd (auto shutdown) relay. if that relay does not function properly it will keep the fuel pump from running properly. when you have a no fuel condition.. jumper this relay it is in the fuse box lh side under the hood.if you now have fuel check the function of this relay. if relay replacement does not solve it, then yer computer is in shutdown mode. go to the tailgate and lock/unlock the tailgate BY THE KEY.if this gives you fuel pressure then you need to replace the body control module due to a short.

I will be careful with my answer as I am not a Dodge mechanic. It sounds like an electrical problem. There are two relays that effect the pump - one the fuel pump relay and second the auto shut down relay. Again I am not sure about Dodge but most autos have a fuel pressure switch that will turn the pump off with high pressure. This is usually through the on board computer that controls the pump relay.

I wonder when you measured power with your test light at the pump - did the car still not start? If so then either your pump is defective and I have seen that in Fords or there is a link in the ground side of the pump that is broken meaning another relay. If you have power at the pump and no start or run then the pump relay is ok. Some of the parts stores have just the motor for the pump for about $50. Do you know if you have spark when you have the no start condition? Do you know if you have fuel pressure at the manifold when you have the no start? These intermittent problems can drive you crasy. My wife had a similar problem with a Taurus several years ago and she would call me and everytime I got there the car would start and go maybe 3 or 4 months before acting up again. I finally replaced the fuel pump motor after pulling the tank and replaced the motor. That fixed the problem. I tried that motor on the bench and even tore it apart and never found why it intermittently would not work.

I'm usually in the A/C section, but saw this and thought I might be able to help. My van(97 Dodge Caravan) did this about 2 months ago. Come to find out there is some kind of solenoid on the pump unit that was working intermittently. Bad thing was I had to replace the pump to replace the solenoid. Your symptoms sound just like mine and the tech I took it to is a friend of mine and a 5 star dodge mechanic(did the work after hours)and said that there has been a lot of these solenoids going bad. Hope this helps.

This might be a little too O/T for a tractor forum. I would suggest www.allpar.com. (go to tech help forum) There should be someone there that can help you. Did you replace the fuel pump? (I would have especially after taking the tank off 5 times). Also, I would suspect it is most likely an electrical issue. Maybe even a ECM (engine control module) problem. quite possibly a combination of problems. How many miles? did you replace the fuel filter? Are you getting any codes? After you get it started will it restart right away after shutting it off? <--that could be key in your diagnosis.... good luck. try the allpar guys, LOTs of Chrysler knowledge there.

i usually check the fuel pressure during key on engine off and key on engine on to be sure its good or bad. a new fuel pump relay would be the first thing id replace.pretty cheep. lucas

Check all electrical connections for the fuel pump and relay for any sign of overheating or melting. Do we have an alarm ot antitheft system?
