Pipe Welding Question

Hi All -

Does anyone have any bright ideas for easily and accurately saddling some 2 7/8" diameter well tubing pipe?? I want to saddle the ends to make perpendicular weld joints with the same type of pipe.

It is worn out well pipe and has wood lining inside it. A torch is difficult to control since the flame hits the wood when cutting through the steel and flares out messing up the cutline.

Other than that - it makes great structural supports and is "free" since we've got several thousand feet of it.

Are there any jigs to fit a large drill press? Band saw jigs? etc... Seems like there ought to be an easy way to cut them...

Watch some of that used drill stem. Some is quite radioactive.

Use a metal chop saw, as mentioned below. I can't remember if it is a 25 or 30 degree cut, but make one cut all the way through the pipe at this angle, then spin the pipe 180 degrees, then make the same angle cut to meet the other cut in the middle....works very nicely. If the right angle is used, it is very close....better than I can do with a torch.

Howard, A "Sure-Cut"is a wrap-aroud template that your torch can follow around a pipe. The local Welding Supply there in Guymon should have that or something simular that will work.
As far as the wood lining, you may have to build a fire and put the pipe in it, lat it burn out or at least to the point where it will slide out, After a piece of pipe is cut off.
A "Sawzall" is the only other thing I can thinkm of tho cut the saddlesa out! Hope this helps.

Saw a guy once use a chop saw and cut at an angle into each side of the pipe about half way through it to form a V shape in it. Raised it up to the standing "post" section of pipe that was concreted in the ground and welded it. It wasn't an exact fit but was pretty close. He filled in the gaps with his welding machine. Guy did a good job with it. None has broke that I know of.

It can be done with a chop saw. However, you will go through cutting blades pretty quick and the wood inside will still cause some problems when welding unless you have a perfect fit. The wood may plug up the blade on the chop saw. Dave

If I understand you right you want to weld two pipes into a tee shape. Instead of the saddle you are thinking of I think you can accomplish the same thing by cutting a ninety degree pie shape notch out of the cross piece with the points at the half way through mark of the pipe. On the other piece (the stem) cut a ninety degee point on the end. The point on the end fits into the ninety degree notch in the cross piece. Weld. Try it with paper towel tubes or pvc pipe.
Hope this is understandable, I know what I mean!

First off 2 7/8 inch sounds like drill stem. Is it magnetic? It is not as strong as regular tubing or pipe when welded. It sounds like you want to make it into T joints at 90 Degrees? Trying to use a hole saw on the hard tube wouldn't work very well at all. Can you chisel out the wood and then take a wire brush to clean the inside? That would be the best. Then it would be easier to cut with a torch. If not you could try using a bigger tip on your torch and cut with the torch at a high angle. This would be difficult to not gouge where you don't want cut. To get an accurate cut with good fit up, you need to make a template out of card board. Be really patient and make sure it fits nice all the way around. Then you can wrap it around your nice cleaned tubing to mark your line. You can take a center punch and put a bunch of marks on your line so you have something to follow if your line goes away. Cut on the short side of the line so you can clean it up with a grinder. You can buy round grinding wheels that thread onto angle grinders. Use a bigger grinder though. The grinding wheels are around 2 or 2 1/2 inches diameter and 3 or 4 inches long. I think there is a couple different sizes. You wouldn't want to use them to grind the whole cope. They would wear out fast. Some people will squish the end of the tube in a big press to do Tee joints. Unfortunately you need to clean the inside of the pipe. When you weld it use 7018 or higher xx18 electrodes only. Tack it in place and use a square to keep it aligned and then put a a few more tacks to hold it so it doesn't pull when welding. You could use a level to make sure everything is aligned as well. Without a template, it takes a lot of practice to be able to do nice coped pipe ends. Hope this helps. Dave
