Large socket set

I have a gigantic socket set from my wife's grandfather's farm. It says CIT, Craft Industrial Tool on it and has sockets I can fit a tennis ball in. It has a price of $289 on it and I imagine it to be at least 20 years old from the picture on it. Anybody have any idea where or how much I could sell this for? Any help would be appreciated. In my experience MOST "made in Taiwan" tools are good if not very good quality. China is the new kid on the block, so to speak, when it comes to tools. I even have some good "made in China" tools. In my opinion most made in USA tools are overpriced.

I saw a John Deere brand 3/4" set on Ebay yesterday, only 1 bid of $10.00 with a $30.00 shipping charge.

It kinda sounds like one of those "made in Taiwan" outfits. Look it over good. See if you can find whether it was made in Taiwan or the good 'ol USA. If it is US made, it is probably worth at least $200. Made in Taiwan, might be worth $50 or less.

Neither would I! I have a set from Harbor Freight that I bought 10 or 15 years ago for about $40. I don't use them that much, but they have been real handy a number of times. No sockets or drive tools have broken. A heck of a lot better than using a pipe wrench or other adjustable wrench on large nuts. And awful handy for use as seal and bearing cone drivers.

The HF sockets are very thick, and that might cause problems if clearance around a nut was real tight. But I paid less for the whole set from HF than I would have paid for one socket from Snap-On or other quality tool companies. If I was trying to make my living using my tools, maybe I could justify spending the money for a high quality 3/4" drive set, but I am not, just fooling around with my own junk.

So I would keep and use the set you have, just don't pay too much for it. If it isn't good enough for your use, you will have trouble with breakage. I haven't, and I have sometimes been known to add leverage with a 4 foot piece of pipe. You might want to be a little careful when you test the ability of any tool. Most anything can be broken if you abuse it enough! Good luck.
