House trailer wheels.

I just bought a dual axle trailer which has house trailer tires and wheels. It has two new heavy duty axles. Can you put regular trailer tires on the mobile home wheels, are the wheels strong enough? Thanks

You can buy brand new 14.5 tires at your local tire store that meet the DOT regs. Or at least you can at our local store.

I found trailer tires 8-14.5 12 ply from local tire company for $59 each and they do not say for mobile home only. Look real rugged. Thanks everyone for the help.

You might check w/trailer places who build trailers. They make hubs that replace the mobile home hubs. You need to take the inter and outer bearings with you. The new hubs will be 8 bolt, just like a 1 ton truck pattern. Several years ago the price was $100 for nonbrake and $125 for brake. The secret to the mobile home tire is air pressure, too low, it will blow.

Here's the deal.
Go to a place that sells new mobile homes. Insurance says they can't pull a new home down the road on anything but new tires. The slightly used tires and rims come back to the home dealer.
They return them to their tire/wheel suppler for credit. It was less than 30 bucks a couple of years ago. Some of them will sell you all you want for the price of the credit. Nice thing is if they sell a lot of homes you get to pick out some nice shiny new rims and almost new tires dirt cheap. They may even give you a better deal if you leave your old ones with them for credit. Call the home dealers till you find one that will help you out. You get the wheel and tire.The ansewer to you question is they take a special rim and tire.

Better not let insurance companys know this but theres 1000s of trailor houses pulled down the raod all the time on tires from the last one set up etc. I used to work driveing and pulled a good number of them all over the country and they all used used tires. Dealer shipped them back to the facxtory and they would put them on the next one out the door. Also none of them had brakes on them either

Yep I've heard the same thing but sorry to say its a sales ploy and nothing more. I've pulled them in 35 or so states and all had used tires. That by the way included Arkansas

Heck of a sale then. 140 bucks for 5 almost brand new tires and wheels. Call Hawks in Conway to see if the ploy is still on. I was first told of this by a tire shop. It worked for me. Let your fingers do the walking and see if you can't find a deal at your local new mobile home dealers. They do the same thing with axels. In fact you can see flat beds going down the interstate loaded with mobile home axels going back for refirb and reuse.

It would be nice if they did refab them but nope they don't. I've had more then one axle that either came out from under the trailor or the bearings went out and of course the blow outs. The reason you not long get to keep the axles when you buy a mobile home is that they want them back for the next one that rolls out of the factory

You can buy 8-14.5 12 or 14 ply that seem to do the job just fine. I have seen backhoes hauled on them and no problem.

The mobile home wheels I am familiar with take 14.5 tires. For some legal reason mobile home tires are not legal for trailer use so I replaced them with what is called Lo Boy tires. Same size tires, just don't say "for mobile home use only" on them. IMO the wheels are strong enough. After all, the mobile home they were designed to carry probably weighs more than you will be carrying. The usual criticism of mobile home axles concerns the quality of the bearings, not the wheels.

Thanks for reply, the previous owner had put 2 6,000 HD Dexter axles, complete with brakes, bearings, and drums under it. So all I need to do is buy tires. Thanks

I think he means two 6000 lb. axles. Use the proper wheels and tires for the axles. Mobile home axles and tires are not speed rated or for continuous duty. Also, up here it is illegal to use mobile home axles on trailers on the road. Additionally the clips that hold the rims on can come loose. Mobile home axles might be OK for a farm trailer for bales or something. Hope this helps. Dave
