Went out today to get the old chainsaws ready for cutting saturday. The poulan 4400 will start on either but thats all it will do. Ran good back in March. Was thinking about cleaning out the carb. Anybody out there good on making adjustments.

the carburetor diaphram is probably bad. sometimes it helps to take it out and clean it off and inspect for any distorsion and lightly lube it with diesel and reinstall it. it might help and might not. can't cost anything to try and it might save you some money and aggravation.

The diaphram Roy mentioned could be your problem that maybe why I hear to never run your chainsaw out of gas and let here sit. Count the turns on your adjuster screws so you can get them back in the same place. This way you can take them out to spray carb cleaner. Newer chain saws are set way lean and first bit of dirt makes them not run or start well. Best thing on a Poland is to open up the muffler a tad and grind the stops off the high and low speed carb screws. They have only one ring so run extra oil in the gas.

As others have stated....empty out that old nasty gas, and replace with the correct mixture of new gas. Nowadays with gas prices, the regular unleaded is probably more fresh than the high octane stuff.

Throw a new sparkplug in it and clean the air filter.

THEN...the icing on the cake.....drop a couple of ounces of super concentrated fuel injector cleaner in the tank, then prime with bulb, pull it over choked a few times and let it sit overnight.

Bet a stack of flapjacks that works.

And from then on, use stabil in the rig and run it long enough to get that stabil into the carb before shutting it down.

If the "super concentrated fuel injector cleaner" has a high alchohal content, then you can do more harm that good.

try spraying some carb cleaner into the fuel inlet on the carb for about 4 seconds.

You are on the right track- and you are not.

Do NOT adjust the carb. I am guessing there is about NO chance the screws got turned since you last used it- and it ran well then.

Do the below- in this order

Empty the gas tank, pump the bulb, and clean out tank with spray carb cleaner (or use a "dip" cleaner if you have it).

Clean the carb.

Go buy new gas- and get the high octane stuff from someplace that is busy. You want fresh gas.

Mix gas per chainsaw directions and pour a small amount in the tank. Spray in more carb cleaner, so it mixes with you gas (or pour in some of the liquid type and add the rest to your car.

Pump the bulb to get frsh gas to carb.
Put Choke on and pull starter several times to pull fresh gas into needle valves, etc.

Go ahead and start. It most likley will.

If it does not let it sit for an hour or two (to let carb cleaner/fresh gas soak everything), and try again.

If the above does not work- buy a gallon of the dip cleaner, and clean carb with it.

Chainsaws use a diaphram to pump gas from the tank to the carb..This diaphram gets stiff with age..When it looses it's ability to move with engine suction pulses , it stops pumping gas..Or in your case the diaphram is probably nearly there..Get a carb kit and rebuild it..Also check rubber fuel lines..On my Homelite 925 , I have to change the rubber lines every 3 or 4 years..The additives in todays gas has a tendency to soften the rubber and it collapses so gas won't flow as it should.. I would try a fresh sparkplug too..

Roy,
On your fuel line problems, try to find pure gas, I use non alchohal fuel in everything I own. The alchohal in the gas will dry out the rubber diaphrams in the carb, but due to differatn type of rubber in fuel lines, some it turns to mush, others is dries it out and it crumbles to nothing.
