OT: Zoysia grass

My wife wants to plant some zoysia grass, I am afraid it will spread and be hard to keep out of the garden and her flowers like burmuda grass is. Anybody have any experience with this type of grass? what are the pros and cons on this? thanks for any information given to me on this.

Zoysia is great if you want brown grass 9 months out of the year.

Limited experience with it here in S.W. Iowa. It is much, much later to green up in the spring, you'll think it is dead. It is also much more difficult to mow and will continually clog up your mower.

I was looking at the ads and thought it looked real good. When I googled it, I saw the other side of the story. Its brittle when its dormant and many other problems. Check it out. Many Univs have tested it.

I live up here in Southern New Jersey. The weather is cold enough to keep it under control. The 3ft patch I planted in 1992 is now about 1000sq ft. Once the weather gets going {about mid May} It greens up and is like a very thick carpet till about late september. I am trying to get my whole lawn into the stuff by doing plugs of sod. I really don't have too much of a control problem. If you use a brick or some kind of hard border that should do it. KEEP it trimmed! Go to a place that sells it. Zoysia sod farm and take a look. I am in North Carolina about 30 miles west of Winston-Salem, not sure which zone but we usually have a mild winter.

You did not say what climate zone you are in. If you are in a colder locall do your self and your niehbors a favore and dont do it.
