Was outside in the garage at 1:15 this morning and my neighbor comes walking in. He said he had a problem with his truck that he needed it to go to work in the morning. He had changed the oil and was greasing the front end when he got the grease gun stuck on a fitting. Went over and took a look and found that the fitting was actually the brake bleeder plug. A wrench and pair of pliers and had it off in about 5 minutes. I told him its not suppose ito be greased. He said so thats why it has that big hole in the end and I just left it at that.

One dumb thing I did once.. After a tiring day at work, I came home & was going to cut grass. Snapper mower.. I pulled the rope til I was worn out, I checked, it had gas, but no spark. So I pulled the cover and the flywheel, checked the points, they were fine. I put it back together, still no spark, it would not start... then I remembered I had forgotten to turn on the key switch..

Several years ago a woman at work asked me to come look at her lawnmower she said "it won't start". Went over to her house, set the controls and pulled the rope. The engine wouldn't turn over. Pulled the spark plug and oil ran out. Drained about 2-1/2 quarts out of the engine. I cleaned things up and refilled it with the proper amount of oil and it ran just fine. Little blue smoke, but that cleared up after a while. Her comment "I thought you needed to add a little each time you started it".

About 30 yr's ago my buddy was working on the turn signals on his PU, he had the horn button and the steering wheel nut off laying on the seat. He went in the basment to get a tool. Along comes the wife, YEP she took the truck to go to tne store, YEP the steering wheel came off YEP it was his fault.
In this same time frame teenage boy was going to do his first oil change after having watched his dad before. After putting the requied amount of oil in itwas running out the dipstick hole. The dad told him to drain it again, the son came and told ME that he didn't get anything out this time sooo I did as I should have from the begining and went to help YEP tranny drained crack case topped off.

Well, I would give the guy a break. I know people that are too stupid and lazy and ignorant to grease anything. At least the guy had enough get up and go to hit every "Zerk" he saw even if some of them were not zerks.

I work with lazy fools that will let a joint on a backhoe seize before they will grease it....but then again I pay union dues every month to protect their dumb a55es (UNIONS WILL BRING THIS COUNTRY TO ITS KNEES, almost already has). that is another story. but in short, the guy would get a break from me. I will take ignorance over sorriness..... .ANY DAY.

My classic moment was washing Dad's new Mustang for him when I was 10 or so... I knew we used something from under the kitchen sink so... I'm surprised I'm still here after he saw the Ajax residue on his car. I'm here to help Dad!

I was brought up a mek-a nick. Remember the mason jars with the oil filler. I was a kid and things were busy, my brother told me to change oil in the Farmall H. Drained the oil and couldn't get the 5th quart in, full to the top of that filler cover. We had a 2 quart jar and the barrel pump. A quart was the same as a jar to me. I learned a H will hold 9 quarts and not a bit more. lol Brothers sure get mad over the darnedest things. Was driving when I could sorta reach the wheel.

I always remember the 3 young mechanics that wanted to overhaul an old Ford out behind my Dad's repair shop. They took the engine out, and after my Dad did the internal work they were busy putting it back in the car.

After everything was in place they spent all afternoon trying to start the Ford. After pulling it around the block a few times, they finally had to ask for help.

My Dad first checked under the distributor cap and asked: "Where's the rotor?" The young men, all looked at each other, and finally one said: "Oh, you mean that little black thing? We didn't know where that went and threw it over the fence."
Sure enough, there it was, in the neighbor's chicken yard!

PS: These 3 guys all grew up to be farmers.

Buddy of mine gets up on a Sat. morning and pulls that leaking radiator for his wifes car and sets it next to the house and drops the hood. He goes around to the back. Wife comes out the front and jumps in the car to run an errand. She gets a good ways off before it seized up. He was some kinda pissed! True story.

I sold a dodge cummins pickup once to a guy and it needed an oil change. He paid a good price for it so I said what the heck. Lets take it down to the basement and Ill change the oil/filter for you before you go. He was all about it. So I drop the plug and filter, drain the fluid, jump up and connect my 55gal drum of Rotella T to the oil filler hole and start pumping. After a minute or two I check the dipstick and no oil so I keep pumping. The whole time I was filling up the drain pan NOT the engine! Plus I had covered the plug! Im not used to having a spectator I guess.

Years ago I was installing a new clutch in a Chevy C60, after removing the transmission I took a couple of bolts out of the pressure plate then I would have my helper to bump the key switch to bring another bolt around. All was well until the last bolt left and when he bumped the key the engine started. The pressure plate flew around the flywheel like a bug bush hog blade. Must have shattered the bell housing into a hundred pieces with me under it looking up. Did not get hurt at all except some debris in the eyes. The whole thing didn't last more than a second or two. To this day I don't know how I kept from getting my head beat off. Talk about doing stupid things!

Years ago my girlfriend after taking a shop class on general car maintenance changed the oil in my car. After adding 7 qts oil she couldn't figure out why the dipstick was still dry. When I looked under the hood the oil funnel was sticking out the carburator.
Her Dad laughed so hard at my expression 'til I told him that she changed the oil in his car first.

I've left the oil cap off a couple times. On my v8 Dakota its no big issue except maybe a little dirt in the engine. On my diesel Mercedes it sprays oil all over the place. Black, nasty diesel oil... Learned my lesson on that one.
Today I checked the oil in my car and found my missing utility knife right in the little groove on top of the radiator thats really handy for laying tools. I'd used the knife to cut the seal on the box for the new airfilter when I changed the oil last weekend...

Yup, back in high school there was a guy, 1 year older than me and his dad is a part owner of the local Massey dealer. He did the same thing.....

Ended up breaking the bleeder off in the grease gun, and the car was undriveable till a new bleeder came in. Whne the teacher asked him what the f@ck he did that for, he just stood there and kinda shrugged.

Now he works behind the parts counter, but there I can atleast tell him what I need and he does a decent job. Better than in the shop....

Had some overheating issues with my dads truck a while ago so I rigs a diagnostic tool into the heating system. It was a schrader valve in the heater hose to pressurize the system to look for leakage, a pressure gauge in the heater hose to read the coolant system pressure. Sort of like a Stant radiator tool but home made.
Anyhow, we fixed the overheating but I left the tool attached to the heater hose in place for future diagnosis.
My dad had a hard time keeping it going one day (its an old vehicle) so the first step of his was to make sure all levels were up to par. He noticed the schrader valve and figured something might be low on air pressure so added air to it.

He showed the the truck later and told me what he done. I said "what", after that I keep quiet and said not to add air to that place. I guess its my fault because it is a schrader valve and thats what schrader valves are for.
My dads a smart man, just not knowledgable about machinery.

Come to think about it. The bleeder does look like a zerk fitting.

I wonder if I ever did that????
