I have an Ottawa drag saw that the gib key is stuck in. The tip that you drive against is broken off.

Any suggestions how to get the flywheel off of the crankshaft?

Thanks in advance.

Can you press the flywheel INWARD a bit, to free the key?

Can you weld something to the key, and grab that with a slide-hammer puller?

The other option is to drill into the key from the end, and either tap it for some Grade 8 threaded rod to pull it out with, or simply drill must of it out, and collapse it.

My Satley Racine had a stuck gib key so I tried very carefully to drill and tap the end and use a slide hammer on it. The grade 8 socket head cap screw broke so then I took the crankshaft and flywheel over to my hydraulic press and set it up so that it was supported by the crank throw and then pressed on the flywheel using a length of tube over the crankshaft. It took quite a bit of pressure but as soon as it moved a fraction everything loosened up and I was able to get the gib key out. Careful when drilling so as not to drill into the crank or the flywheel. The real fun comes when you have to fit the new key to the tapered flywheel key slot.

Gib keys have a standard taper and should be available in good parts and hardware stores. Try McMaster-Carr, www.mcmaster.com
