getting a old bathtub set in

I am remodeling an old house. Rather than buying one of the flimsy tubs at the big blue store, I am putting in an old 5 foot American Standard made in 1950 (that weighs about 200 pounds). I am going to repaint it etc. My question is, how do I get it level and in place to stay? It has two little bitty "legs" which are kinda sharp at the back and on the drain end it has a long bar like to sit on. You cannot see underneath for the "skirt" when you get it set in and this thing is heavy to pick up over and over. I just cannot get it sitting level. I did cut a piece of plywood to pick up the wall side of the tub to sit on, but it is kicking my behind. Any old head carpenters have any tips? thanks

I've demo'ed alot of the old cast tubs out of a house, but never put one back in. There's nothing wrong with putting a shim under the skirt to get it level, assuming it's not too far off level.

I've heard of guys laying plastic down where the tub will sit, and putting a slurry mix on top of the plastic. It was more for support which I wouldn't think would be a problem with a cast tub. It may help you get it level though. You'll have to hide any gaps on the skirt with the new flooring or trimwork.

Railhead,

I've never set a 1950's version of an American Standard tub, so there well may be something that I don't know about this particular installation. But with all of the tubs that I have set, I always installed a ledger board on the wall behind the tub that held the back edge of the tub up at the right height to get it to be level from front to back. It's a simple matter of measuring from the floor to the place on the tub that is going to sit on the ledger board before you put the tub in place, installing the ledger at the right height, and setting the tub in place.

Good luck. Hopefully some real plumbers will tell you exactly what you need to do.
