I remember walking into the 30x48ft shop at my house before I bought it and thinking "wow, I'll NEVER fill this up!" Yeah, famous last words. 20,000lbs of machine tools and airplane and a step van, plus my lawn mower, cement mixer, workbench, air compressor, etc... later, I can't swing a cat in there. That's in about three years.

Ditto, I never part with anything I might need someday. If I throw something away, I'll need it in a week. If I need a certain item, it really P!sses me off cause I can see it laying right there where it is supposed to be but it's not there.I can spend the whole day looking for it and not find it. I go to town and buy another and then trip over it after the job is done. If I keep it, I'll never need it but if I throw it away, then I 'll need it. Chris

I can relate to your pain. The best advice that I've ever received about shop size was from my Granddad when planning your shop figure out how much size that you will need and then double it because in 6 months time you'll be swearing at the lack of space in it. I personally have proven him right several times....

I wish I knew a complete answer! I too am a packrat, and so is my wife. Luckily she and I tend to collect different things that go in different areas. I bet she has 20 cubic yards of fabric in boxes and plastic stacking crates in our basement. It is a real pain when she wants me to help her find a specific piece of fabric.... Oh well, I love her!

In my garage/shop I have been working on more accessable storage. A neighbor came up with a bunch of old, not too beat up tall filing cabinets that had belonged to a nearby school district. He sold them to me for $20 each and I am slowly filling them up by category, and labeling the drawers, so I might actually be able to find something when I need it. I also recently was given some old metal sewing pattern cabinets. They are built very strong and will be great for storing all kinds of things. They are low enough so they also could be used for a nice workbench with the addition of a plywood top. I added a balcony over part of my shop that is built way stronger than necessary. I store stuff up there that I seldom use (since it isn't easy to get stuff up there or bring it down), but can't stand to get rid of since I might use it some time.

My main problem has been being able to find something I know I have and need, but can't remember just exactly where it is stored. Over the years, I have wasted a lot of time looking for things I needed, and often I have just given up and gone to town and bought more of what I had been looking for. Hopefully my new systems of storage will make this less of a problem for me.

I don't know how much storage a person reasonably needs, but it is probably lots less than my wife and I want. We are thinking about another pole shed, probably about 36x60, just to keep stuff in that sits outside. And I bet that between us we will fill anything we build, no matter the size! Good luck!

Good rule of thumb is, if you use it once a month, own it and keep it , if you use it once a year, sell yours and go rent it , if you use it less than once a year, definately rent it and you shouldn't have ever owned it. If you follow this, you won't have to keep putting up buildings.

Good rule of thumb for you maybe. But for me, if I followed that philosophy I wouldn't own the tools necessary to build a wall, rebuild an engine, or a differential, or balance a tire, or a lot of other things that I wouldn't trust (or be willing to pay) someone else to do for me. Each person has to make that call based on the space and motivation they have.

I hear you!! Im a pack rat, from a family of packrats. My dad saves bent nails and straightens them. Best thing I've found that helps me is to quit buying stuff in bulk unless I use it in bulk. I dont need a chamber pot of antiseize compound. 3/4 of it goes bad before I use it. I try to buy by the job, if I need a bolt I buy a bolt rather than buying a dozen to lower the cost per bolt and then when I need one still cant find it.

I was working on a guys Harley heads once and he said mind if I clean up your shop a little its kind of messy. He was a construction laborer that did alot of demolition where they saved stuff and organized it.He did more in two hours than I could in a week without knowing where anything went he just put the largest boxes against the wall and went down in size. All stray tools he put on my other bench.I said why cant I do that.I takes a certain knack to organize well and I have failed.Right now my garbage can is even misplaced outside somehwere.
