Just purchased a sandblast cabinet and would like to use glass bead for the media. I don't have a clue where to start looking for glass bead. I can find silica anywhere, but the glass bead seems tougher to find. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Also, what does it cost ballpark?

Thanx,

Mike

Northern Tool has glass beads, but you might have to call since it isn't usually listed in the catalog (1 800 533 5545.
Also: www.eastwoodcompany.com and www.tptools.com

Mike, silica sand is really a problem even in a blast cabinet. I use glass bead. Any paint and body supplier or the tool trucks like Snap-On can get it. There are also a number of different blast media that can be used depending on what you are doing. Aluminium, use walnut shells, glass bead etc. Silica sand is better for ferrous metals. The grain of the sand cuts too much for the softer metals like alum. or brass. Also play with the air pressure. You can do more harm than good at too high an air pressure. Keep in mind that any media you use does "round off" edges etc. Be careful with objects like pistons. Also make sure you wash all objects with soap and warm water throughly after blasting to remove imbeded media. I have seen more than one motor ruined because of imbeded media in the piston ring grooves etc. One last thing make sure your cabinet has a filtering system and don't open the door unless the filter fan is running and the dust in the air has settled. Hope this helps.

Mike, I use to buy glass bead at automotive body
supply shops. It does a real nice job in a cabinet
setup. Really good on pistons and engine parts.
TIP is another source but the shipping to my area
almost doubles the price. I haven't purchased any for a long time so I can't give you any help as
to current cost.
