Bolt Specification Question

I have a Case 1394, made by David Brown of England. I noticed a hydraulic leak today...the high pressure line leaving the pump was loose. 3 of the bolts were a bit loose and the 4th is broken off. The parts manual says the bolt is a 1/4 UNC x 1 inch. What does UNC stand for and is it a standard SAE thread or something different from the UK. Need to get a new bolt and not sure if I can get from a local store on Saturday, or have to get through the Case dealer next week.

Thanks
Tim

Google is your friend.

UNC is Unified National Coarse. that means you are looking for a common 1/4-20 bolt, nothing unusual. I'd get a grade 8 but a grade 5 will work. Don't let the hardware store sell you a no markings grade 2 bolt.

Thanks Charles...I was planning on a grade 5, but will see about the grade 8. It needs to have a small head that accepts a 3/16 allen wrench due to space limitations.

BTW, I tried Google and only came up with a million hits on the University of North Carolina...seems like that happens a lot to me. Just like my post on the Tractor Board about regulations concerning Hay production, I could not find anything and the rest of the fellas had several websites where information was available.

Thanks again..
Tim

What you need (now that you have more thoroughly described your bolt) is a

"Socket Head Cap Screw" This is the style that has the recessed hexagonal "socket" for an allen wrench.

The 3/16 allen (hex) wrench is standard for a 1/4-20 socket head cap screw. Socket head cap screws (SHCS) are not typically supplied with "Grade designations", but with either a stainless or plain steel the strength will be adequate.

For google (or other search engines) they "rank" what are the most popular search results, so if you search for "UNC" by itself, you will find exactly what you did. However, if you search for "1/4-20 UNC" or "UNC thread", you will get very different results.

Here is a link to the part you are asking about. As others said, any decent hardware store (maybe even wally world) will have this part.

just a little tip when using google. Put something like UNC bolts or fasterners and it will reduce the search to bolts.

Go to a specialty fastener outfit and you could get an allen head bolt of proper strength. They are fairly common. Dave
