Looking at a 2005 GMC Serria (priced right, 33K miles)with a 5.3 liter engine and need to know how dependable this engine has been. I have a 99 Chevy 2500 with the 6 liter that has been very dependable transportation. Both trucks are extended cab with the 6' body. I tow approx 4-6 tons and/or haul 1000-1200 lbs only about 10-15% of my total driving time. My 99 will be a tough truck to beat and I'm fearfull that the next one won't be as good!

You say the 99 was a 2500 6 liter, so it must be the "new style". I believe in 99 they produced both new style and old style 2500 Silverados and Sierras. The 6 liter was not available in the old style. The "new style" 3500's did not come out until 2001.
You don't say what model the 2005 is but it sounds like it is not a 2500 if it has the 5.3.
Didn't all 2005 2500's come with the 6.0 standard? If you are thinking of replacing the 2500 with a 1500 you will have to drop back considerably on your towing expectations. Hauling 1000-1200 lbs should be no problem with either truck.

I have the 5.3 engine in my 2001 extended cab (Chevy). I bought the truck new, and now have over 150k on it. The engine"s been great---no problems whatsoever. I occasionally pull a trailer, use the "tow/haul" mode of the transmission. All that seems to work pretty well, BUT, the gas mileage goes down the drain---from around 17 to 12 mpg.
Of course, the transmission never goes into overdrive either in the tow mode either.

I wouldn't even consider pulling 4 tons with a 1/3 ton TV much less 6 Tons , you are asking for trouble . Brakes, Frame & Springs aren't heavy enough to handle I don't care what manufactor says they will pull . plus you will be over on GVW for that TV and if you have an accident you are in trouble . I have a 2004 Crew Cab Silverado 2500 with a 6 Ltr , Auto , 373 rear and I wouldn't want to pull over 4 Tons with it .

Buy it. It's simple and reliable compared to the 2007 diesels. It's a 6.0L that didn't get bored out.

I got a 2000 Chevy 2500. 5.3 liter automatic trans.
Pulls 10,500 pounds, not like a Duramax but does the job.
Gets around 20 mpg (empty).
No problems yet except a water pump, brakes, and tires. Uses less than a quart of oil between changes. Interior looks near new, A/C, radio, heat, etc.-no problems.
It is just a GOOD truck. But I've only put 232,000 miles on it so far. I'll still be driving it when the wheels fall off.

The 5.3's and the 6.0's are in the same engine family, GEN III smallblock, siblings of the 5.7 liter LS-1 Corvette/Camaro engine, which was introduced first.

So, really, if you've had the 6.0, the 5.3 should be "more of the same".

The 5.3's go like stink and get way better mileage but I don't know if they would be good to pull 6 tons. That's a lot for a half ton. Dave
