O/T Halloween Pranks?

While sitting in the combine yesterday listening to the radio, Halloween pranks were mentioned. It got me thinking of the time when I was in high school and we did the "tricking thing". There were two gas stations in our small town. One the owner liked the kids and we could joke with him and he would joke with us. We got along with him great. The other was the complete opposite. He would drive around town trying to find the kids that were doing something wrong. The first station owner left all his "junk" outside on Halloween and the other would take everything inside. We didn't bother the fun owner, because he wouldn't chase us. The second owner didn't take his pop machine inside on Halloween one year, so guess what we did. We loaded the darn thing in a pickup and took it to the local cemetary and unloaded it. "Coke adds life" was the slogan on the pop machine. Anyway, when we got to the bottom of the hill going back into town the owner and the town cop were waiting for us. We went back to get the pop machine and had to haul it back to the service station. It wasn't as much fun hauling it back as it was taking it! When we got it back, nothing was broken so everything turned out okay. We were lucky that we didn't get into a lot of trouble. Anybody else have any Halloween prank stories? We have all heard of tipping over outhouses. That was before my time or I'm sure I would have did that too. BTW, I am friends with BOTH station owners now, although they are now retired. I didn't say our prank was "smart" just fun at the time!!

One year we turned a guy"s VW beetle sideways in his driveway. Sounds prety tame, except for the fact that there was a retaining wall right up against one side of the drive, and a 3 foot ditch (new sewer line being put in) right up against the other. He had to get a couple of friends to pick it up and turn it back around the right way...made him sort of late for work that day.

I had a guy tell me a few years back about a prank he & some friends pulled many years ago in his younger days. An older fellow stored his crane in a hay barn and the doors to the barn opened in. They got inside, closed the doors, and stacked hay against the doors and behind the crane to prevent the doors from opening, then they exited the barn through a window. Oh how he chuckled when he told that story....

a the dad of a guy i used to work w/ owned a local fertilizer dealership. as the story goes, on certain nights this guy would go to his dad's shop and w/ some friends load up a floater tire in the back of a pickup and head into town. as the town was laid out, main street was long and straight, with a hill at one end, and a dead end at the other, anyway, they would start backing down main street at the top of the hill, slam on the brakes and 2 guys would shove the tire out of the back of the pickup. it would start rolling down the hill, usually pretty straight he said, bouncing a little, and would apparently get going pretty fast...to the point of making that woof woof sound that a tire like that makes at road speed. he said they hit a couple of buildings from time to time, a car once, but usually made it to the end of the street.

The church I go to had a preacher when I was about 5 or 6 that had a Crosley Car the parsonage front porch was about 4 ft off the ground. So every Halloween it ended up on the front porch.

We had an old Rotory gas station in beautiful downtown Greenslanding along route 220 that had living quarters for the operator. When the operator would forget to pull his 'donger hose' (pneumatic bell) inside the garage for the night, one of us boys would remind him by sneaking over and pulling the hose across route 220. One time dad got a call at 2:30 AM stating that 'his boy' was going to get his donger pulled across the highway if it happened again. Dad stated 'well he's been at his Grandfather's in Buffalo NY for the past 2 days with his Mother but I'll tell him when he gets back'!
WHEW for once I got lucky!

Us guys used to loaf at the gas station after closing.There was a railroad crossing next to the station. I found an air horn that broke off a semi.I would give a blast on it just as a car was about to cross the tracks.MAN! Some drivers can stop real FAST! Most laughed too except for a few soreheads.lol,bob

If it was one of those machines where the caps were exposed,you should have gotten an opener and some cups.Drinks on the house!

A friend of mine pulled into a Wal-Mart parking lot next to a big white Lincoln with white leather interior. As he opend his door two white poodles gave him a scare as they guarded the big car. He got real low and jumped up to the window and pressed his face against it at the same time. The poodles (startled) started jumping over the back seat then up front again, What are the chances of two poodles not being able to control their bladders in the same car? After a few rounds of this he decided he best leave before the owner came back to their car. NE IA Dave

we egged the people that were mean,and soaped thier windows. put snakes in their mailboxes. plasing bags of poop on porches and ring the doorbell. the best we did was we put a couple packs of firecrackers on a ciggarette and put em in the back of the constables cruiser,inside a old paperbox .then we shot bottle rockets at his house .he came out ,got in the car on the street and we saw the flashes in his car,.it couldnt have been timed better.once a buddy put poop on the door handle of our local playhouse.it was like 20 degrees outside. here came a guy that grabbed the handle ,and slipped on the ice at the same time.up he went and landed on his back.the first thing he did was look around to see if anyone saw him fall..then he went on in with poop on his hand. lucas

had neighbors down the road years ago, 3 brothers, always joksters. they put a hen phesant in the mail box, then sat under a tree till he showed up. mailman opened the lid, phesant flew right in the car with him. mail everwhere. they laughed like h*ll

Lets see, fish in the pool at the country club was good. Bluegill didnt like the chlorine much but man those carp and catfish kept on swimming. M-80s in pumpkins were right good fun too though lucky we all kept our fingers. Ahhh, memory lane, so much has changed in 20 years.

Kids in Detroit used to go out the night before Halloween and set abandoned houses on fire. You could watch the 11PM news and see the fires burning all over the city from the helicopter. I heard the city has put a stop to it.

This guy would get his old wooden out house tiped over every holloween. You know the kind you just dig a hole in the ground and put the house on top of. The kids would sneak up from behind and push it over. One year he decided to move the house foward a few feet befor the night and the kids ran up to the back and slid right into the hole. No prolem this year!

Speaking of out houses. I remember my dad telling me that some kids took the out house and put it on the school steps. Everybody knew who owned it. Anyway, the next morning they called up my grampa and said "Your out house is on the school steps". Grampa in typical fashion answered back " What the he?? do you want me to do about it". Dave

In my era the pranks were mostly fun not destructive. At least the network of freinds I had. One Halloween four of us thought we were big and strong, so we picked the neighbors flare box up and turned it 180 and set it back down on the gear. The next day he went back to picking ear corn with his one row pull picker, didn't notice till he went to unload. If I remember He laughed harder then we did and I think we went back and helped him unload it.

I get the drift of what you're talking about but since I wasn't raised in farming country I don't understand the specifics. Maybe for me and other non-rural background readers you could define a few terms so we could understand the story: flare box; set it back down on the gear; corn.

A flare box would be a grain cart where the walls or rather floor, slope to the middle. It must not have been bolted down to the frame or chassis part of the wagon or running gear. So they picked it up and turned it around. They probably turned it so the gate, where the corn comes out to be unloaded, was toward the front, making it nearly impossible to unload.

Do a search on flare box images on yahoo or google and you will see what he means.

We used to act like we were playing tug-o-war across the road. We'd get 5-6 guys on each side of the road ad act like were were pulling on a rope. Car would slam on their brakes ad we'd run like hell.

When we were kids we would take one of mom's purses and tie it to a fishing pole. we'd lay purse out in the middle of the road and hide in the bushes. When people would stop and try to pick it up we would give a yank. Well, one time the guy stopped, he opened the door, reached down and as the purse moved he fell out of the car. It was still in gear and started driving off. He must have had a little to much to drink be cause he just stood up and watched his car drive away. About 200 feet away the car when off the road and into a pond up with the water up to the door handles.

I really didn't get too involved in Halloween pranks...except for the time when I-64 was under construction in our area, and we decided that the construction company had used WAY too many flashing barricades out next to the drive-in theater. So we hopped in my old International Travelall station wagon, threw two of the flashing barricades in the back, covered the lights with our coats to get through town unnoticed--it was about 30 degrees out--and took the flashers to the local high school, and put one each on the north and south ends of the gym roof.

For some reason, it seemed like the IGA store always had toilet paper and eggs on sale Halloween week...and while I never got into that sort of thing, a lot of kids did. I saved my cash for gas money...I mean, $1 would buy 3 dozen eggs on sale, but it would also buy 3 gallons of gas back then...and you can't go cruisin' without gas. If you weren't cruisin' Frisch's in New Albany, or the bowling alley and Dog'n'Suds back home,on Friday or Saturday nights, you were considered "un-cool."

My grandparents lived about a 1/4 mile from a country school house. Two of my uncles made plans with two of their friends to upset the outhouses at the school. Before the two friends arrived my two uncles moved one of the outhouses ahead about the width of the building. Due to darkness the two friends weren't aware of this. They moved in to upset the outhouse and fell in the pit - as my uncle used to tell it, "clear to their hip pockets!!"

You missed it if you haven't had the joy of out house tipping! When I was a kid they loved to be able to load or at least drag one out in the street in town. Of course no law man around so if the owner didn't protect it, their outhouse was fair game. One night the lady who owned one of the taverns in town decided to sit in hers to protect it. Her husband told a bunch of us boys if we would sneek up behind it and tip it with her inside that he would give us $5 each. Of course were more than ready to do it for him. We tipped it before she could get our, and since she was a
large woman there was no way for her to get out. You should have heard the howling and screaming she did as we ran away laughing with our $5 bills!!!! How or when she got out I never knew, and its much to late now as they are both gone. She didn't keep him around long, but I don't think that out house tipping had anything to do with it. He may have known something was coming though, and that may have been behind his generosity with us?????

I was always tinkering on tractors and never had time or desire to get into trouble. Must be why my parents were always supportive of my tractor ventures,they always knew where I was and what I was doing.

Old timers in my area used to talk aobut taking buggys aprt and reassembling them on someoen's roof. Another thing was to take a wheel off the buggy and find a tree with a trunk the wheel would just slip over. cut the tree off so it would just barely reach through the field, then put the wheel down over it agaainst the ground and drive a wooden wedge down into the trunk. The only way to get the wheel off was to dig under it and cut the trunk off then drive it back out.
