Awhile back someone over on the KL board ask about a �Marmaduke�� I ask if they meant "Marmaduke Surfaceblow". They must not have. I've been trying to find an *affordable* copy of "his" book "Salty Technical Romances" for over 20 years! Some of you guys will appreciate the stories about him. They�re hard to find but they�re floating around the web occasionally.
Marmaduke Surfaceblow is a composite personality of all the BEST in creative maintenance engineering. It's mostly related to the power industry but the stories cover about everything eventually. Steve Elonka was the primary author - he was also the editor of Power Magazine. He developed the character using the "unusual" remedies to problems with power equipment, ships or about any other major equipment that Power Magizine readers sent him. I have a file of Marmaduke stories � when I find one I print it � never know if you�ll find it again.

His cigar's name is another piece of power plant history - Ringleman's #5, if I remember correctly was the original scale for the opacity monitors in the smokestacks - and #5 meant you had serious problems!
Any of you guys who appreciate innovative, technical thinking will love Marmaduke stories!
It takes some digging to find them but they're all interesting! If you ever find a copy of the book for under $250 it�d be cheap!

I'm in Lincoln County - 'bout 15 miles south of Hickory. We're actually closer to "the city" than we want to be but it's still kinda nice to have Hickory, Charlotte and Asheville all close enough to make a quick trip to if we need to.

Wow that was a very interesting post. I read the stories that were in the links that you provided and the 4 others that were on the web site that resulted from a search. I really liked the stories and wish that I had known of them earlier. I checked the prices of the books and like you said $250.00 would be a cheap price but it's still a little too much for me. Any way I'll keep on the lookout for more. Thanks for the post.

I grew up reading each copy of my Uncle's "POWER Magazine", especially MARMADUKE.

Thanks for the memories!

I recall one episode where he was sent to some god-forsaken arctic place to supervise the installation of a HUGE stationary engine, where the HUGE flywheels extended down into depressions well below the floor. There was no overhead crane available to lift the flywheels, and lower them into place. After scratching his head, and smoking a couple of his trademark cigars, he ordered the crew to fill the depressions in the floor with blocks of ice, and then they rolled the giant flywheels into place. As the ice melted, the flywheels were lowered into place.

Sounded like a good idea, at least in theory!
