Dismounting car tires from the rim

It never fails.... once I get the bead broken, I don't have much trouble pulling the outer bead over the rim. But I must be doing something wrong when it comes to getting that inner bead over the rim. It may take an hour and the inner bead is not in very good shape. It gets torn, cut, bent and generaly messed up. Am I removing from the wrong side? Wrong bead first? I have 3 18" Kentool tire irons just like the shops, plus a 2lb hammer, but something is wrong!!! Any place to go for pictures and instructions? I know of Gemplers' tractor tire removal course, but nothing for cars. The tires are the old sizes, various widths, like 225x75r15. What's the secret??
Thanks for the help.
(If my Coats tire changer wasn't buried, I'd use IT.)

fix a rope lift over your tire changer and you can lift the wheels easy and fast..... if you have a good tool and don't use it,,give it to someone that will...

I'm not sure what the problem is, but you sure are determined! For the second bead, or inside, I stand the tire up, put the bar between the bead and the rim. Then pull the bar back over the tire. I always pull towards me. The tire will be bent down and the rim will start out of the bead where the tire iron is. Then I take a rubber mallet and start beating on the bead, first one side then the other. Usually 3-4 hits on each side of the iron and the rim will be free. This works well with 6 ply and below. 8 ply is tough. More plies go to the shop.

I worked in a scrap yard for 7 years and one of my jobs was to take the tires off the rims (#1 steel)($8000 tire machine). I found that some brands of tires are just plain hard and some are so easy it could allmost be done by hand.
Maybe look for a old tire machine. My dad picked up an old manual one for about $25. Sometimes helps to have both of us pulling down on the lever but sure is better then swinging the sledge hammer at them

I mentioned above that I have a Coats 1010 machine. But lifting the tires up over the post doesn't do my back any good. So I'm trying to learn the manual way. I've seen guys remove tires at shops and it looked easy. I'll have to go back for another lesson.

Worked at Tire Service Company in Indy right out of high school in 1957.Those guys in the service area had rigs that held the wheels on about a 45� angle and they used nothing, but their bare hands.I kid you not.They could change tires quicker than a machine does it now.I never did learn their tricks.Wish I had now.

How many do you have to do? We usually charge about $4 per tire to dismount them at the shop and it can save you a lot of time and frustration. I can do one with the tools you have plus a duck bill hammer in less than a minute, but then I have been doing them for 15 years so I make it look easy. Only one way to get good and that is to practice. But unless you have a car load to do why mess with it?

I mess with it because it's more like $8-10 here and I have 56 tires on 15 vehicles, not counting tractors. Of course they are not all used at the moment, some just having found a home with me over time. Hey, anybody got more tires? Count 'em.

I totally agree with you tire guy. I just took a tire and tube to our local tire place to have mounted. I thought about trying it but figured I would do about $10,000 dollars in medical damage to my arm with a prybar! The local place did it for $3 bucks and it took ten minutes and was perfect. Dad even has a tire changer at his place but It isn't even worth listening to the air compressor or having him pinch his fingers or my new tube. Let the guy do it that does it 20 times a day every day.

Maybe you need a slam hammer. We have one about 4 feet long - like a pipe with a pry tool on one end - with a solid bar about 1 3/8 diameter and about 4 feet long that slides inside the pipe. The bar weighs maybe 10-20 pounds.

We haven't run into any tires/rims that will say "no" to it.

Some rims have a ridge inside that make it a little tougher to get off, but nothing the old slam hammer won't get off one way or another.

You remove them on the valve stem side, or the side that has the smallest off set. You also take both bars and pry the tire back and then you can carefully hit the bead of the tire to work it off. I do it all the time on tires from lawn mower size up to rear tiractor tires.

That's exactly what I do, but I can't seem to hit the bead without damageing it. Do I need a duckbill instead of a regular 2lb sledge hammer?And I also use genuine tire lube from the tool truck.

I that place a duck bill will not help or hurt since you use the flat part of the hammer to beat it off not the duck bill
