Does anyone have any experience using propane instead of axcetylene? My brother told me it'll do most anything as well, and will more than meet my needs.Said he used to cut up trucks with it.Think he's just tired of me borrowing his oxy-ax. rig. Anyway,he'll give me most of what I'll need,so the price is right.Just need to get a O2 bottle, and a regulator. He has the rest in his "spares pile".Thanks, DaveP

Propane can be used to cut any thickness material it just takes longer to preheat. The only down side is you cannot use propane to weld with (its not hot enough).

Very good rig for typical farm shop operations. I have had my rig for about 5 years now. I use a 20 lb. LP bottle and what praxair calls an E-style O2 cylinder (stands about 5 ft tall, but only about 8 in. in Diameter). I go through about 2 1/2 O2's to one 20 lb propane. With this rig I only have to rent the O2 bottle. LP bottle costs about $25 at the farm stores and i fill it for $7. Way cheaper than Acetalyne around here. Safer too. I have cut up to 2 1/2 in. square shaft with no trouble. mostly farm type stuff though.

i think its great.

Propane will work just fine BUT it will take more propane to do the same job that acetylene would do and therefore you will need larger tips and more pressure. Propane burns cleaner and produces a clear flame that is hard to see at times. Be careful with it.

I use both in my shop. The propane is cheaper. You can use all of the oxy/ac gear with the exception you must get a tip compatable with propane. Takes a little longer to heat the metal to begin the cut but not much. You can even use the refillable cylinders avail. at convience and hardware stores.

I've used propane/oxygen mostly for heating & a little cutting. I think that combo is used a lot in salvage/junk yard operations since the propane is less expensive & easier to to store in larger amounts. The down side is it is not as hot & cuts are not as clean. Guess it depends on what you're going to do with it....

i have used propane for 30 plus years now and listened to all the cans and cants. it will do any of the jobs acetylene will do tips are a little different for cutting, pressures similar , the temperature difference is minimal only a couple hundred degrees, they are both over 3000 so itworks well and is much less exspensive. go for it.
