Ok so I got the log splitter fired up.
I am installing a lovejoy coupling, but I wanted to make sure I don't need a pump before putting it back together. Believe it or not, I mated the two shafts which had sprockets on the end for an old coupling using a double roller chain with .....DUCT TAPE! I just used that to make sure the pump worked, not as a permanent solution. Had it running like that for a couple of minutes, but when bumped the motor up to 1/2 throttle or so, Duct tape failed. While it was connected though, everything seems to be working.

The main issue is the speed of the cylinder.

This is a home made affair, with a huge cylinder
which I think is from a crawler or loader (probably a 4' long cylinder) and a 5.5 hp Honda motor turning the pump.

I only ran the motor at about 1/3 throttle before my tape coupling failed because it hadn't been run much in over 18 months, so I wanted to ease it back into service.

Do I just need to throttle this bugger up for faster action, or might I be low on fluid?
Should I dump the old fluid and refill?
Maybe I need a larger pump?

Of course I'll try running it faster first, but what would be the next thing to check?

No, you forgot to wrap the wifes nylon pantyhose under the duct tape first for extra strength.This reminds me of the time I tested a horizontal mill with a motor hanging off Ty-wraps.

Red Green would be proud of you! He would suggest you didn't use enough duct tape. He might recommend building a spool you could mount the roll of tape on and after starting it on the coupler you could start the motor so it would wind the tape on the coupler for you untill the whole roll was on there. ;-)

The cylinder and pump should be "mated" as in the pump puts out what that particular cylinder needs. If your cylinder is too large, the pump won't keep up and it will be really slow, but still work. When I split wood at my father in law's. his is like this...but it sure beats the heck out of swinging a maul.

What RPM is the pump rated for ? Is it one of the little 2 stage jobbers designed for splitters ? If so it should be run close to 3600 RPM or full throttle on the gas motor.

The gpm of the pump is relative to the rpm and the output pressure. Most small gas engines are 3600 rpm. This is just ballpark, not knowing the pressure spec, and for a single stage pump, lets say your cylinder is 4" bore x 24" stroke, the capacity of the piston end will be 1.31 gals.

4 x 4 x .7854 x 24 / 231 = 1.31 gals

Run the engine at full speed and time the stroke. Generally, pressure is applied to the piston end on the splitting stroke and on the rod end on the return stroke.

Is this a 2 stage pump? Also remember a good rule of thumb is it takes 1 horse power for each one gallon of flow at 1500 PSI. Wait till I get home in about 2-3 days and repost. again. I know nothing about 2 stage splitter pumps. I am used to normal hydraulic pumps. J.
