Portable Oxy-Acet Welding Kit

After reading yesterday's post on welding small items, I decided it's time I try my hand at simple weldng and cutting jobs.

For a first purchase, anybody out there have an opinion on Northern Tool's Tote-a-Torch Oxy-Acet Welding Kit ($315.00)
or a similar set-up ? They offer complete welding package with small tanks for small general welding and cutting jobs.

My only experience is a basic welding course years ago. My needs are purely recreational but would love to mess around,safely of course, and don't want to lug around large tanks of gas, not yet anyway. Thoughts appreciated.

I think you would be better off to go buy a victor or harris setup then go to a welding shop or somewere that sells welding gas and just lease a decent sized set of tanks , those short tiny tanks hold just enough gas to really get you started and if there is any problems such as valves going bad they fix them instead of you paying for repairs . Also do as I did look around local auctions I bought a torch set with tanks and cart for less 1/3 of what the lease and hose set would go for .

I'd like to add a bit here.

There is no black art to setting the torch. Open the torch valves wide open, acetylene first. Continue opening the reg on the acetylene bottle until the flame jumps off the end of the tip of the torch and stop. Now open the O2 valve on the torch and begin to increase until the flame starts to get that blue hue. You will now see the faint blue feather of excess acetylene, keep going until it just disappears, leaving a nice tight cone. Torch and regs are now set. The creative part comes when you get a regulator that likes to slightly wander, then you have to keep a close check on what the flame is doing (got a set of those at work).

If it is taking too long to heat the metal, your tip is too small. If the torch is crackling and popping, the tip is too big. With the regs set as above it is impossible to screw this up. If you start managing the flame from the handle with the torch valves, THEN it will get a bit more difficult, but the above still applies.

Now for welding thin stuff, you can leave a touch of excess acetylene in there (1/8" long feather) and it will cause the surface to melt just a little before it blows through. Old airplane welders trick. You also run a feather when welding cast iron to keep the carbon content up.

Make sure not to get into an oxidizing flame when welding (feather disappears and the inner cone gets short and dull looking) or it'll ruin your weld. Slight oxidizing works good for brazing, though.

OA welding does take a bit more practice and is a more difficult than other forms of welding. Once you are a good OA welder, you understand HOW to weld and HOW it works. The transfer to other welding methods is immediate and natural and you'll make a better welder.

I like to get somebody started on OA and then give them a few minutes on a TIG machine. The whole process is very similar from the users point of view. The puddle is SOOOOO easy to see and regulate on the TIG that it greatly enhances OA welding skills and learning proper OA welding enhances TIG.

You have also chosen THE most versatile form of welding. The only things you can't weld with OA are the REAL exotics like titanium and zirconium. Right flux and filler rod and you can do anything. With brazing, you can even join dissimilar materials that cannot otherwise be joined. I promise you'll get it, just keep practicing. It's just like playing piano, guitar or anything else... you gotta practice to get it, there is no other way.

Give me a couple of bananas and I can teach a moneky to MIG weld if the machine is set right. A hand of bananas and I can have him stick welding. It'll take several more before he is qualified on TIG. When it comes to OA, even I'm still eating bananas.

Hi Mike,

I've never heard of this system of setting the flame for O/A welding.

"Now open the O2 valve on the torch and begin to increase until the flame starts to get that blue hue" is unclear to me. Which valve you are opening to adjust the oxygen?

Is this the procedure?

1. Open acetylene valve on torch completely.
2. Open the butterfly valve on the acetylene tank regulator, light torch, adjust butterfly valve to the point where the flame jumps away from the tip.
3. Open oxygen valve (or valves) on torch completely.
4. Open butterfly valve on oxygen tank regulator to set neutral flame.

If this is the procedure for establishing a neutral flame, then each size of tip can have only one pressure setting---the pressure at which the acetylene flame jumps away from the tip. To weld thicker metal you use a larger tip.
Have I got this right?

When the flame jumps away from the tip, it is an indication that that is the maximum gas flow the tip can handle. Have the acet. valve on the torch open all the way. Same with oxygen. Use the regulator to adjust for a neutral flame. This is how I was taught originally. When I went for apprenticeship, they said that after you get a neutral flame, open the acet. regulator slightly more and see if the neutral flame goes away. If it doesn't, you're good. If it does, open the oxygen regulator to get a neutral flame. You sometimes can do this a couple times. It absolutely guarantees that your gas pressures are equal. Never worry what the gauge says. Having an equalized torch eliminates backfires. I didn't think a minor little extra adjustment would make that big a difference but it does and allows you to adjust your flame exactly how you want it with the torch valves. You had to pass the test or you would have to do your whole first year over. For the test you had to weld about 10 or 12 gauge 2 inch pipe in position from bottom to top on both sides. You had to keep a key hole all the way for 100% penetration. After welding, the pipe was cut into strips, ground flat on both sides and half were bent face side up and half were bent root side up. You were allowed a maximum 1/8 inch flaw on all the bends. The bends were 180 deg. around about a 1 or 1.25 inch round bar. You had to have a perfect weld and the last thing you need is for your torch to backfire and wreck your "key hole". I was wearing soft rubber goggles and melted them a bit on my test. I prefer the hard plastic ones. I've done a bunch of oxy/acetylene welding so I can pass on some tips I have learned. Hope they help. Dave

Welcome to Tool Talk forum, by the way. Your advice is extremely useful and your manner is very agreeable. You are clearly a valuable asset to this site. I'm sure I speak for everyone who needs or appreciates welding advice and information when I tell you that I look forward to seeing you contribute as much as you can.

I know I'm not slow witted so I'm not sure why I'm having trouble getting this method of setting O/A torches straight. Here is what I didn't understand in your explanation: "...and allows you to adjust your flame exactly how you want it with the torch valves." Since you have already opened both the O and the A valves on the torch fully and set to a neutral flame with the regulators, the only adjustment left to you with the torch valves is to turn them down, right?

Why isn't this method more commonly taught? Victor's equipment instruction manual, all the videos I've watched concerning O/A welding, and every instructor at the local Community College I've worked with has taught that you set the pressure of your gases at the regulators (of course) adjusting for different thicknesses of metal within narrow limits, and setting the neutral flame with the torch valves.

I'm not trying to argue with you; frankly, I'll take an ounce of expertise over a ton of conventional wisdom any day of the week. But you're articulate, so maybe you wouldn't mind offering your perspective on why this is the way it's taught if there's a better way.

Also, is there any part of this method that's applicable to O/A cutting? It seems like there wouldn't be since the tips are useable over so much greater a range than welding tips by an adjustment of the oxygen pressure at the regulator, but the method you and Mike are describing took me so much by surprise that I don't feel safe making any assumptions.

P.S. I think 6013 rod is more versatile than you describe it. It's a medium penetration freeze/fill rod that does what it's supposed to---which doesn't include being a substitute for 7018 when 7018 is required.

Thanks for the compliments. I have received excellent advice for my problems and thought I would return the favour. I don't usually have things go right, just problems.LoL. First off, 6013 rods have their place. I only used them in school. On the other post about uni-strut, I assumed it was galvanized and 6011 is better for burning through galvanizing or dirty or painted steel. If the steel is clean 6013 is good on thinner metal. They make 5/64 rods as well. A lot of people will use 6013 because they are easier to use. The problem comes when they need to weld something that has to stronger. They use 6013 because it is easier but not the best choice for that particular job. Old bad habits. Sometimes 10 min. with some good instruction can improve your results ten fold. As far as setting the flame, you are correct about the valves open all the way. You shouldn't set the flame when your welding with the acet. only jumping the tip. It should be just below. When I said you can adjust it how you want it, I meant fine tune it after you shut it off after equalizing. Once it is equalized, you can shut the torch valves off and use them to adjust the flame. It should be near the maximum but sometimes you might need it just a touch cooler. A lot of times the acetylene pressure doesn't even read on the gauge. Manufactures don't want you to think their gauges aren't accurate. This method guarantees equal pressure regardless of what the gauge says. Works too if the gauge is buggered. Same thing with stick welding, don't go by the dial on the machine. Test your heat on a piece of scrap and adjust to suit the job. I mentioned to Kestral about the proper way because I know a lot of people do it with the gauges. I wasn't trying to make it seem like a special art to set up a torch. It's no use knowing how to do it if you don't have a torch yet. With a cutting attachment or a heating tip, you're not melting the steel. Maybe for a second when cutting but you can't equalize the torch because you need greater oxygen pressure for the cutting jet. When buying torch tips 6 preheat holes are better than 4. For straight lines have a preheat hole in front of and behind the cutting hole for the best cut possible. For shapes have them staggered. It's not as critical as a clean tip. On thinner metal angle the torch backward up to 45 deg. [flame pointing forward to cutting direction] for a nicer cut. I like my torch valves pointed down. You can't accidently hit them with your hand and make it nice for holding when you light and set the flame. I like purox [Esab] torches because you can flip the short cutting lever over to avoid hitting it if you are using it for heating. Purox tips used to have the thickness they were for stamped on them. You didn't have to try and remember. Sometimes using one size smaller tip and going slower after preheating the cut line will give a nicer cut with a narrower curf. Always cut on one side or the other of a line to get the exact length you want. If you cut on the middle your piece will be short especially when cutting multiple pieces of a length of flat bar. With a heating tip you also want to have the valves open more and it wouldn't be a bad idea to equalize the torch as sometimes they backfire. Usually if you hold them too close and the tip itself gets too hot. A lot of older welders wan't the new kids to find things out the hard way. Welding is something that you could never learn every aspect of in 10 lifetimes. I had very good training and have worked with some extremely experienced welders. Know an aircraft welder than can weld aluminum foil with a special welder that goes down to .5 amps. Pop cans are routine for him. I've heard that nickel alloys are the hardest common metals to weld. Monel apparently has the cosistency of butter when it's molten. I'm up here in oil country [Edmonton] so we need a lot of good welders. Thanks again for your kind words. I know how hard it can be. My first welds were terrible. I don't think I could weld that bad if I was blindfolded. If you or anyone else has a welding question I'll try to answer and also tell you if I don't know. Just thought I'd add that when you have everything set up just right, you can use the flame to blow little drops of filler rod right into the puddle without having to dip the rod in the puddle like you have to when TIG welding or brazing. Dave

Good words Dave, can't argue with it a bit. Glad you caught the "bring the flame back to where it attaches to the tip" bit and also clarifying to use the reg to set O2 pressure. It was late and I was tired. As you point out, the important thing is to use the regs to set the flame up to max flow and neutral. I was taught this by a former Linde and Lockheed welding engineer. Grouchy old guy, but he knew his stuff.

You can back off a bit with the torch valves but too much is inviting backfiring due to reduced tip flow. I just hate when you find yourself between tips, larger one is a bit too much heat and pops if you back off, smaller one is just not quite enough.

OA is pretty much the first thing I reach for unless the parts are huge and thick, then it's a stick. If it needs to be real pretty, it's really fragile or aluminum, I'll go to the TIG machine. I have the flux and can weld aluminum with OA, but it's just so messy and the flux is nasty stuff. It'll eat the part up if you don't get it ALL off.

My instructor in school was even surprised when I told him about checking for neutral flame after you obtain it the first time. I should add that in order to introduce oxygen you might have to use the torch valve to turn down the acetylene a bit and then open it full again after the oxygen is added. Welding is a slow process to learn and do. Practice is the best way to get proficient. Good advice helps. Dave

Armed with all your good advice, I just returned from the welding supply store with a nice medium duty Harris torch kit complete with hoses, tips, goggles for $289.00. Also bought two mid-size cylinders with cart, and "The Oxy-Acetylene Handbook", first copyrighted in 1943. Now I'm excited.
After a class or two, I should be headed in a more self-reliant direction around here. Guess I'm growing tired of running around, wasting gas and time bringing things to people..... Kestrel 'n CT

Hi Kestrel,

135Fan covered most of the technical information you'll need (the 1/7 of the acetylene withdrawel rate you can't safely exceed is per hour, if the context didn't make that clear) but I can provide an observation from personal experience. I bought a $100 welding/cutting set (no tanks) from Harbor Freight so long ago that it was when most of their goods were from the other China---Taiwan. The quality of the equipment was adequate to good, but not totally trouble free. Chinese equipment now may be as good as Taiwanese was then, but my opinion is that it's not. The problems involved in owning non-standard equipment might be most extreme when service or repair was required, but that wouldn't be the only time it would be an issue. For instance, if you wanted different size cutting tips, you'd probably be SOL.

I own Smith and Victor oxy-acetylene torches and Harris oxy-propane (they're tools so I'm genetically wired to have to buy more of them than I need) and they are beautifully made. When you consider that these are tools which are built to last a lifetime, and passed on to last additional lifetimes, the additional cost of high quality equipment seems minor.

Some of the best money you'll ever spend is taking a welding class. Do it if you possibly can.

Thanks guys for the instant advice, esp. 135Fan. I may bother you again re: equalizing when I get set up. Good points I'll be sure to heed. I've located a supply house 20 minutes away to go visit and kick the tires a bit. I can't think of a better skill to learn while hooked on old tractors and in a retirement mode. To me, expert welders have always been magicians..... .

Glad I could help. I think you were far better off to get a new outfit and Harris is owned by Lincoln so parts or repairs will always be available. Newer regulators are safer than some older ones and the older ones can need repairs. Not turning out the adjuster and opening the cylinder fast can pop the gauge for line pressure. I was lucky because I did oxy/acet. welding in high school and also in my apprenticeship. It was the first welding we tested on. They don't test on it now because MIG has taken over most oxy/acet. welding. Thanks Stan it is 1/7 per hour. It's been a long time. Mike explaned how to equalize the torch. I have seen some really bizarre ways people supposedly do it. You have to do it for each size tip. Always have a tip cleaner handy. It can make a huge difference. Slide it in and out once or twice only, don't keep going back and forth. It can damage the tip. Be very careful with small tip cleaners, they can bend and break in the tip. Oxy/acet. does teach you what to look at, especially how the puddle forms and flows. The nice thing with a flame, you can pull it back if it gets a little too hot. TIG is really nice if you have a foot pedal to control heat. On thin material you have the option of brazing as well. When cutting you don't have to equalize the torch because you need more oxygen. If you get a heating tip, it's good to turn up the acetylene. Your manual should have settings for cutting and heating tips. Clean your tip often when cutting as well. Especially the middle oxygen hole. When a tip is perfect you'll get a long straight line coming to a point when you push the cutting lever.. It usually has a louder hissing sound when it is perfect. I was at a trade show and saw a rep from Smith doing free hand cutting than was as good as on a machine. Don't ever use the torch to knock your cut pieces off. I've seen guys using them like a hammer and there all bent up. Make sure your cylinders are always tied up. A full oxygen is like a missile if the valve breaks. Open acetylene valve about a half turn [Max. 1.5 turns out] oxygen is supposed to be opened all the way. When shutting torch off, close acetylene first. When cutting open oxygen valve on handle all the way. Use cutting head valve to adjust flame. I think that covers most of it. Post on here if you need anything further. Wear your goggles and practice. Dave

Kestrel: One thing to think about. Don't buy a small torch set just because of the price. If this is anything you're thinking of using more than once a week, by all means move up a size or two. About the only people that should consider buying a small set is the people who REALLY need them, such as someone who's going to be welding or cutting in a place where any other set would be impossible to get there. Lots of people make the mistake of buying the small sets because they're cheap and end up with something inadequate to do the job. If this is something you're planning on using, hie thyself to your local welding supplier and set yourself up right with a Victor, Smith or Harris unit (your choice--just get one that's supported locally), bottles, regulators, hoses and a cart. The cost will be under $500, and you'll thank yourself every time you use them.

Some good advice,buy or lease your tanks locally. If you really feel the need to learn how to weld with gas go back to school.Welding with Oxy-acet takes a TON of practice.Setting the torch properly is an art in itself and without that knowledge its hard to even get started.Wire w/gas is easier,but will cost big bucks to get going. Lincoln buzzboxes are by far the most economical way to go.Probably pick one up used for $100.Tanks are a great thing to have regardless if you use them for welding. C.D.

As long as you can get replacement parts and different size tips[cutting and welding], most torches are OK. Some people have a preference. If you are cutting, you will go through oxygen a lot faster than acetylene. For actually melting the steel to weld only acetylene is hot enough. Acetylene cuts the nicest too. If you want to do any big heating jobs for bending or something. You can't use a rosebud heating tip if it's even available with a small acetylene tank. Acetylene can only be drawn out of the cylinder at 1/7 of it's capacity or acetone comes out of the tank and can explode. Also never turn the acet. regulator higher than 15 psi as acetylene is unstable above 15 psi. You rarely need more than 3 or 4 psi as 4 psi will cut through over 12 inches of steel. A lot of people will turn the regulator up to try to get more gas when the tank is empty. When it's empty, it's empty. The big problem is that they forget to turn the regulator back down to the proper level. Always open cylinders slowly and it's best to loosen off the regulators. Heard stories of the adjusters flying out and seriously injuring or killing people standing in front when opening cylinders. Flashback arresters are a good thing to put on as acetylene will burn back through the hose unlike propane that only burns at the open end. It's very safe when used properly. Acetylene cylinders have to be used standing up. If you have them laying on their side, let them stand up for a while before using or acetone could come out. Oxygen doesn't matter. I thought I'd give you some pointers so you will be safer. You can always get bigger cylinders if you need them. Fittings are all standard from the same supplier. Acetylene can have different fittings. Make sure you can get your cylinders filled locally on an exchange program. Shop around, there are several small torch sets available. When you get your set, I can can tell you the proper way to equalize your torch for welding so you don't get a lot of popping where all of a sudden your nice weld gets kind of blown up a little. Hope this helps you out. Once you get it, you'll wonder how you got along without it. Dave

135Fan--I could use some pointers on the proper settings of the oxygen and the acetylene on these small tank units. I have such a set a find them most useful, but I am not sure if I am setting the regulators properly. I use mine for heating stuck together parts and for occassional cutting. I just used them about an hour ago to remove a broken part in a brake caliper bracket. I had to heat it cherry red and let it cool a couple of times, but it finally broke loose. The Ford dealership wanted $87.90 for a new one and I could not get it until next Monday. These little units sure are handy for the occasional user like me.

I don't think I'd be heating around brake parts. Don't cool with water. Heating,welding or altering steering is illegal. Brakes are just as important. If you are mostly heating and cutting you don't need to equalize the torch. I wouldn't think you'd have a very big heating tip. Set your acetylene at about 3 or 4 psi. For heating only set your oxygen 5 to 10. It's not critical. Adjust for a neutral flame, turn the acetylene up so you don't have black smoke and the flame is still in contact with the torch tip. Then open the oxygen until the outer feather just comes to the same size as the inner pointed flame. For cutting open the oxygen valve on the torch handle all the way and use the valve on the cutting head to adjust the same way as above. 30 psi should be good to handle most cutting. You can adjust it up or down as needed. Too high and you're wasting oxygen. Where you purchase your tips they should have a chart to show approx. pressures and thicknesses for the different size tips. Hope this helps Dave

135Fan---Thanks for the tips on the settings. I will run off a copy and keep it with my torch set up. There was no problem with using the torch on the brake caliper bracket, as it was removed from the vehicle and was fastened to my large workshop vice. I had one caliper bolt that was froze to the bracket, and it absolutely had to be removed to allow for a new special bolt which allows the calliper to float.

i'd visit your local welding supply store and see what they have. if you need service or parts you can get them locally. also you will need to go there for refills. the portables go thru gas pretty quick. we own some cylinders and also lease some too. the lease seems to bee the better way to go. my oxy aceteylene lease runs about 125 for 5 year. when you are empty, you just exchange them for full ones.
