A few months back, I happened to come across an ad for a wood burning grain dryer. I don"t remember where I came across this ad, if it was this site, Fastline, or some other magazine, but I remember seeing it.

My dad doesn"t farm for a living, more for something to do, but he is starting to get up there in age. I don"t ever remember using a grain dryer all these years, only a fan with perforated tube that you auger into the grain by hand. Picking corn, putting it in corn cribs, and running it through a combine a year later gets to be very time consuming when your doing anywhere from 2,500-4,000 bushels of ear corn.

So here is what I was wondering. Has anyone ever made a wood burning grain dryer, or know where I can find plans to maybe make one? Has anyone ever made one out of an Out-Door wood stove by any chance? Any other ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance for any and all help in this matter.

Year a Round Corp is working on a corn drier that burns corn. Been working on it a few years, must be difficult to get right, but they trot it out to all the ag shows.

Alot of thrify farmers around here used them in the past. We had one that was a large tank inside of a bigger tank. the inside one was like a barrel stove it was about 4"x10" the outside one was about 10"x20", it sat in front of the grain bin fan the fan drew hot air from around the stove to dry the grian worked well but thats alot of wood to cut hope this helps

Neshem-Peterson, at Berthold, ND made some COAL buring BIG grain dryers. A nearby elevator has one, although I don't think it's been used for a while.

The coal-fired dryer near me is at the Agate, ND station of North Central grain of Bisbee, ND.

They ducted the coal furnace into a LARGE formerly propane-fired DELUX dryer to save $$$$ AND reduce the chance of fire in the sunflowers being dried from fines passing though the propane fire, and lighting off.

AFAIK, it worked GREAT, except for the lack of an ash removal system. The coal ash had to be drug to one side, and scooped out by hand. If I get by that way in the next few days, I'll snap a photo, and post it.
