We bought a maxtron 450 and a feeder off ebay a few years ago for the business. We mainly needed something single phase,with 100% duty cycle, to use on our homemade buildup machine. I can tell you our machine has run 6 to 8 hours a day, at 300 amps, running .052 wire out of a 500lb drum, on several occasions with no problems. I remember another time I ran nearly 100 lbs of .045 through it over the course of 2 or 3 days doing some hand work and again no problems. So, to answer your question, the Maxtron 450 has never let us down and, in my opinion, is a GREAT machine. I believe the feeder we've got is like an S22A or something like that. It has the capability to use preprogrammed cards for automatic operation and also has, I believe, five different weld settings you can program into the machine itself and manually toggle between. We don't use any cards butI love having the different manual programs because I can get it set like I want it for different thickness materials and simply toggle through the programs when I encounter each without messing up the settings for the others. Basically it eliminates having to "dial it in" every time. As for the pulsed MIG, I've heard it's nice but personally I don't se a major need for it. The main advantage is it makes it easier to weld thinner material by pulsing the current. Doing this allows the puddle an instant to cool before it pulses again preventing too much heat buildup causing the weld to burn through. Basically all you have to do is PRACTICE and use smaller diameter wire and a lower current for thinner metal and larger wire and higher current for thicker metal. Do that and you shouldn't have any problems with anything you run across from 22ga sheet metal to structural steel. Better yet get a job in a place building truck bodies, using old Miller Dialarc machines, where the welds had to be feathered in and pretty or you ground and polished them til they were. Often times they'd make a mistake in the sizing and when the panels were bent and fitted there's be 1/4 inch gaps between the panels that had to be filled. Needless to say it doesn't take much grinding before you learn how to make the welds, even the ones filling a 1/4 gap, nice enough from the start that all you have to do is give them a swipe to polish....welding is alot easier than grinding...
