Bought jointer at auction hasn`t been used in a while, has surface rust on table and fence.
What to use to remove rust?

I have used a drill with a wire wheel, then applied some eurathane on table worked good haven't had any more rust

3M surface conditioning discs - sort of like round rescue pads. I use the medium lightly then use the extra fine. You can get them in roloc kits for electric drills. I use 7" ones in a body grinder. Do not oil first. It will load up the discs.

My dad loaned his old table saw out when I was a kid and came back looking brand new. The guy said he took it apart and had the cast parts machined down at a clutch and flywheel shop. It was clean and perfectly square. He said he needed perfect cuts for an old woodie wagon he was restoring. Kinda extream but I'm just tossing it out there.

After you have it clean use paste car wax to stop rust from forming. I did this on my table saw and steel bench a couple of years ago and they are rust free today.

WD-40 and fine grit sandpaper should work. Also oil it with Heavy way oil, or chainsaw chain oil afterwards to prevent rust.

If you oil the table on a woodworking machine I guarantee you will be cursing yourself for the next few months or years. The oil will remain on the surface and get sucked into your material. This will prevent stain and finish from adhering well. Instead use a good paste wax. Car wax or floor wax will work well.

The one I brought home last month was more dirty than rusty -- but cleaned up well with a good soaking of the PB blaster and followed up with a random orbital sander on the bed and fence.

PB Blaster, steel wool, 3M pads, and a razor blade. Put a coating of PB Blaster across the top and then "plane" it with the razor blade. Wire wheels and sanding will alter the surface and leave scratches that are hard to get out. The razor blade method will take all the rust off and leave the top looking old but refreshed. You can then use the 3M pads and/or steel wool to make it look as new and shiny as you want.

When you are finished, wax the top and you'll be good to go.

Ive done it alot. A opital sander with 100-200 grit paper. Splash lots of water down and wet sand away. it will come beautiful. just towel it off and gve it a wax and your good to go.

One of my neighbors is a cabnet maker with a very creative streak. If he picks up a used tool with rust on it, he just uses the heck out of it to scrub the rust off. arter getting it clean, he uses the paste floor wax on it. I have never seen any rust on his normal tools

I would use my Orbiting Sander with an 80 Grit Pad to shine it up and then give the surface a light rub down with Kroil Oil on a Rag.

3M makes a 2" sanding system for gasket removal etc. they 1/4 turn to install and remove, NAPA has them in a brown pad and 50 grit roloc bristle disc and the box also says rust and paint removal. I use this all the time to referbish gasket serfaces and for rust removal on steel, cast iron, aluminum, etc. you can get a nice finish to the metal also.
