Neighbor trying to decide if should install leaf guard gutters or regular gutters.

Concern is that has a ribbed steel roof, would water fall to quickly and overflow/bypass the gutters?

We had them installed a few years ago and have been happy with them. With several large pines and oaks around the house, the old gutters were always clogged up. I'd have to clean them out twice a year or they would completely fill with water whenever it would rain and become so heavy that they would threaten to fall off the house. The last time I cleaned out those regular gutters, I accidently struck a wasp nest with my hand. The nest was tucked up in a corner. I had a very lousy day as a result. It's not a good idea to jump off a ladder and then expect to be able to run. With the gutter toppers, no more wasps or pine needles or oak leaves or clogs.

I would not put rain gutter on a steel roof, esp in NY area. Have you ever seen snow come off a steel roof? Takes down the gutters real slick. Just a thought from the UP of Michigan

I had the Gutter Guard gutters put on this past spring. So far I have no real problem. Water will run over some on real hard rains but I have seen open gutters that were stopped up run over much worst. Mine can be cleaned by lifiting the cap and the company will clean for me at no cost if they do stop up. I have a steep roof and don't like to work on the roof anymore. I will see how they work out this fall with leaves and pine straw but so far fine.

Hi Brian,

I'm not surprised that the guys who have already responded haven't been that impressed with the systems they have seen. Personally, I like to be the last kid on the block to try a new product---no unpaid beta testing for me. I like uncomplicated technologies that have been around for fifty years or more when it comes to dealing with basic things like water, wind, sun, leaves, fire, dirt, etc. I am a cranky old guy, but I've held that particular attitude since I was a sprat.

All the best, Stan

I've seen those leaf-guard gutters demonstrated several times, and I am not impressed. Under the perfect conditions I am sure they work quite well, but what happens if the leaves are deteriorating before the rain? Then you have small little crumbs and pieces of leaves wich will then go directly into the gutter, and there is no way you are going to clean them out.

I used to have them on other homes, but they're a pain and not worth the money or effort in my opinion. Leaves still get under them, stuck in them and lay on top of them. They make guter cleaning a much harder job. I have raised rib steel on my home now and much of the water runs off the roof so fast, it never makes it to the gutter...just shoots right over. I wish I had 6" gutters, but they are way too expensive to install.

I also have a rib steel roof, before i had the new roof put on i had cheep gutter covers from lowes or HD .they are white plastic and snap onto the edge of the gutter . they did not go back on after roof was finished . after pin oak leaves filled the gutter for the 3rd time i was going to cut the tree. i saw the old covers under the shed .so what i did what was put the front lip on the gutter and bent the back side down instead of putting it under the rib edge. All large leaves and nuts slide off,,what falls in the crease seens to blow off with a blast of wind in a few days ./JM.2$
