I was having some trouble with the computer the last couple of weeks and seemed to have another pesky spyware program on there and was fit to be tied on the darn thing for a week or two. I tried just about everything to get rid of it and was about to give up and take the old Dell to the computer repair shop and I tried something and it worked. It may help some of you people that have ever had problems with the computer. I used the system restore and the spyware is apparently gone, at least for now (knock on wood)! You just hit, Start> All Programs> Accessories> System Tools > System Restore. It will ask you how far back you want to go, such as earlier in the month, which I chose October 1st, and it will take your computer to the way it was operating on that day. Pretty slick, worked for me tonight. Later people.

My theory is that the companies that sell anti-virus programs back the creation of viruses and spyware.

After all, if there where no viruses then they wouldn't have a market would they...think about it.

In addition to Ad-aware6 and HiJackThis I check all the questionable files on antivirus forums. You can upload the report from HiJackThis to a forum and people will give you advice on how to fix your system.

Butch is right-Spybot is an outstanding program. You"ll be sick if you look at the report of what it finds on your computer.

Hi Davpal,

The only problem with using restore is if your infected when you create a restore point then you incorperate that infection right back into the system upon a restore orperation.

After 3yrs of using XP here's what works for me. I created two user accounts, one admin (user #1), one user with limitations (user#2).

I use user#2 for all internet usage other than my banking or brokage usage.

For banking/brokerage I use my admin account.

I keep all my sensitive data on a USB external HDD. I keep the HDD switch turned off except when I do my banking.

I keep a copy of all my "must have" files in one area, "Sharred Documents". I back up once a month to CD.

Every 7 to 8mths I hard reformat my "C" drive then reinstall XP. This takes 4hrs start to finish with the way I have it set up. My system runs really fast for just having a dial up connection. I get rid of any junk that's collected with less headaches.

When do I know it's time to reformat? When my system starts slowing down and defrag doesn't help or I have a glitch in the OS.

Yep,

First rule: Never, ever download anything "free" from the Internet.

Always comes equipped with some little unwanted buggers.

The spyware and adware gobblins seem to have the upper hand at the moment. I am sure that the firewall and anti spyware folks will catch up. No single program wil keep you free of the junk since it is often packaged with downloads or hidden with needed programing. A good and also free program is Spybot search and destroy. They do ask for a donation and it is darn well worth it. Another device I am just learning about is a router sometimes called a hub which will act like a firewall for most intrusions.

brother works for IBM and sets all his (and mine too) computers up this way:

multi-port router right next to the cable modem, works as your firewall, change the password on the router and write it down somewhers too

run the "adaware" free version every few days or pay $26.95 for 1 year of instant version

he also adds free version of Zone alarm as 2nd firewall but overkill for how I use my system

use the nortons anti-virus only - their "Internet Security" package is no good for me

from what I read, hub is much simpler device than a router, no firewalll function
