Made my own. Used a cheap security camera with a telephoto lens in an outdoor housing off eBay and a video motion detector (also off eBay) tied to a door bell. Anytime a car comes down the drive it rings the door bell. Only falses are from birds flying directly in front of the camera lens but that doesn't happen very often.

Camera is mounted on the house but I ran a video cable and wire out to the shop with another door bell in the shop and an old video monitor. When the bell rings I look at the monitor to see who/what is coming. It even works at night, the cars head lights set it off..

We have the Norwegian Elkhound brand. Works best when not wired or chained. Don't know how far because we have a short drive but I suspect he would go a ways. Kinda fun to be around when not needed to watch the drive too.

I always heard that Guineas (sp?)(those funny looking birds)were the best thing for that.

I would agree with that.

Buy a few keets today and in a few months they will grow into the best watchdog/driveway alarm you ever had.

I second the Dakota Alert..mine approx 900 feet as the crow flies with trees in between and it only does metal. Order the bird house to go with it and no problems with the rain.

Got mine at stray haven. Anything makes any noise within 100' of the house she goes off. only costs about 10 pounds of feed a week to operate and 6 bucks a years to license. Otherwise when in standby mode she keeps Mama's feet warm and snores worse than Mama at night. Believed to be Labrador Retreiver brand or a mix therof.

The type I have (about 3yrs old now) is the type uses a magnetic sensor...cars,4wheelers etc anything that has metal mass. works great about 125yds from house and uses about a set of batteries per yr. Made in USA by a Company in Va. Its wireless and I have a lot of trees between xmitter and recver.Never surprized by anyone pulling into yd now. Even dogs are tuned into it when alarm goes off they know someone is in driveway before they hear it and begen barking.Wouldnt be without one now can use upto 3 xmitters to monitor diff roads. About $100.00 cant remember brand name now but will get it if intrested. Jack

IVE TRIED SEVERAL. THE ONE I AM CURRENTLY USING IS FROM RADIO SHACK. "THE DRIVEWAY REPORTER"
WORKS GREAT. UP TO 300 FEET WITH LITTLE OR NO OBSTRUCTIONS ,WIRELESS OUTSIDE AND 9 VOLT BACKUP FOR RECEIVER INDOORS. (POWER OUTAGES)
ALSO HAS OPTION TO PURCHASE SECOND REPORTER FOR ANOTHER ENTRANCE. MINE IS SETUP TO 1-BEEP = FRONT ENTRANCE
2-BEEPS = REAR DRIVE
MAY ALSO BE SET UP TO USE LIGHTS INSTEAD OF BEEPS. HOPE THIS HELPS. THE BREEZE

I have had the Miltronics Infra Alert for about 3 years. The transmitter is mounted on a tree about 200 feet from the receiver in the house. The Miltronics is made in the USA. The 9 volt battery in the transmitter unit lasts about 8 months for me. I did have trouble with a loose battery connector that I replaced with a Radio Shack connector. The alarm catches people and animals (deer or big dogs) and all vehicles. I have noticed that gray or silver cars when cold sometimes do not set off alarm. If the cars have warmed up or been driven several miles it will always alarm on them. My wife has a gray car and sometime it does not alarm on her leaving but always coming back. There are other alarms and maybe better but I have experience with this one.

I too have wondered what is available. I have a 300+ foot gravel drive and a log house in which you cannot hear thunder unless it is coming in the door. Really could use such a thing. I'm thinking a solar cell, battery powered type so no wires would be needed.

I have looked at these and there are really cheap ones and some not so cheap. I have a friend who got one from the local Menard"s for under $70.00 and he likes it. I have thought about the ones that claim to be military grade electronics ($150 range) and wonder if that isn"t marketing hype. I will be interested to see what the other guys say on this.
