I just acquired a T/C Contender .44 mag pistol. I put one of those holographic red dots on it. I'll be using it for deer gun season. I've always used my muzzle loader, but this looks like too much fun to pass up.

That Thompson Center ought to do a fine job for you...as long as you don't require a follow up shot. I'm afraid with the extensive cover here in some parts of Wisconsin...a muzzleloader isn't the most practical, but they can accomplish what you ask of them. Even a lot of centerfire cartridges are useless since the farthest one can expect to shoot in heavy cover is sometimes a maximum of 50 yards. I stick with a shotgun in our area. Say what you will about centerfire power, but 1 oz. (437.5 grains) either out of a muzzleloader or shotgun stop deer like a 10 foot wall!

There is a reason why guys that hunt Cape Buffalo always have a 12 ga. with a full magazine for follow-ups. It's all about ft/lbs of energy.

I have carried a 30/30 Contender in the past (albeit not mine) and always thought they were kind of clumsy in the woods...but a guy has to stick with what he likes. That's why the Winchester 94 will never die, even if it is out of production.

I won't go anymore because there are too many drunks out there with high-powered rifles shooting at every sound and shadow. The 30/30 is still king here because you can shoot in a little brush. The faster lighter projectiles can disintegrate if they hit a small branch on the way to a deer.

the posts on here make me smile . my old boss dead now used to spot light deer with a 22 rifle . shot them right between the eyes . must have killed hundreds . usually droped in their tracks .

borrowed a couple from a friend to use 1st was a 454 talk about a wrist breaker but bambi dropped where he was standing never knew what hit him ,next year I grabbed his 50 cal desert eagle was like holding a 2x6 but it done a nice job and recoil was not that bad due to size and weight .

My hunting buddy uses a 44 mag. Colt Anaconda. Some times at close range It will just blow right through them and they take off so you may consider loading down and shooting a larger bullet, otherwise shoot through the shoulder, this disables them. I hunt almost always with my .357 and at close range it knocks them right down by shooting them through the shoulders. I use Hornady 180 grain bullets.

I carry a 44mag as a back up gun for deer hunting. In Missouri any center fire type round is legal which is stupid in some ways since that means you could go hunting with a 32 pistol which is just plain to small but thats the law

Dunno what state your in, but check your local laws. They won't let me use my .44 Magnum (rifle or pistol) for deer in SE Nebraska.

I haven't shot a Contender for years, but always thought a 16" barrel in 45-70 Govt. would make a good deer dropper.

I have been looking at the Contender and Encore for a long time, let us know what you think of it.
I have also been using a T/C .50 for many years and am thinking about getting a Contender. Were we live in MN, we can't use rifles, just muzzleloader, shotguns, handguns.

I believe in Northern Minnesota you can use a rifle, but not in Southern Minnesota, and you cannot use a pistol unless you have a special permit along with a cross-bow.

Same deal here in NY (southern). I think it would be better to allow the low velocity rifles and phase out the shotguns. Seems the greater accuracy of the weapons would reduce the number of big chunks of lead being sprayed around the countryside.

Some of the Southern Tier DMU's are allowing rifles this year, and from what I've heard, more will follow if there aren't a lot of problems. The unit we hunt is still shotgun only, but as pistols are legal anywhere, I've used both my .44 mag. Dan Wesson and my Savage Striker (pistol) in .308 with good success.

My dad has an encore .50 cal. muzzleloader, I've shot it before, it a great gun, really accurate, but heavy
