O/T? solar heat panels

I have gotten 3 panels (4X8)from my Dad that were installed on his roof. He does not have any info about them other than they are a French design. They were placed facing south and set on a east to west line. His roof and mine are a different pitch and most likely our homes will not be set on the same North-South alignment, so the framework will not give me the proper TILT or angle to set the top back to catch the suns rays. I am in northern Wisconsin and my zip code is 54801 if that will help. Can someone give me the proper angle to set them instead of my "close enough for Spooner" guess. Thank you

You can aim it perfect without math. Just strap a length of pipe squarely to the collector and aimed towards the sun. Tilt the collector so the sunlight shines through the pipe. March 21 or Sept 21, half way between dawn and dusk are good aiming dates/times.

Thank you very very much for the great information. My porch roof is flat from South to North with about a slope of 28 inches in 24 feet going from west to east. If I recall correctly we are 45 degrees Lat. but I will check that out before I build the frame. It should need to be 60 to 61 degrees.

An excellent book on air heating systems is "The Complete Handbook of Solar Air Heating Systems" by Steve Kornher with Andy Zaugg.

I highly recommend a purchase or an Inter-Library Loan. It was published by Rodale Press and is a respected work.

Anyway it states----latitude plus 15� for correct tilt. (Last paragraph on page 49.) It also states that for air units instead of water heating units tilt isn"t as critical.

Well, most everything I know I learned from the Wizard of Oz. According to the Scarecrow: "The sum of the square roots of any two sides of an isosceles triangle is equal to the square root of the remaining side." But, somehow I don't think that's QUITE right.

Optimally you want the panels perpendicular to the sun's rays all day, every day. You can't get that with fixed panels, and practically you don't want heat in the summer time.

The efficiency is proportional to the cosine of the error angle and that loss of efficiency is very small for errors under 10 or 15 degrees. Its a 30% loss at an error of 45 degrees.

That said, I recall the solar collector I built back in 1974 (8' x 24') was sloped about ten degrees more than my latitude (I'm at 42 north so I tilted it 52 degrees). It was really hard to shut down in the summer time and easily overheated in the late spring sun. And water rotted the wood box and structure so its gone.

If I was to do that again, I'd go with vertical collector panels and depend (especially at your latitude) on snow reflection or the reflection from a few sheets of foil faced foam on the ground to more than make up for the loss from the angle. Or better, I'd just use double paned windows (not low-e coated) into the house and save on ducting, fans, and that sort of stuff. Thomas Jefferson worked out that if the window area was something like 15% of the floor area the solar heating would be optimum. You have to prepare for storage or wild temperature rises with direct gain solar though. Something like an exposed concrete slab (but insulated at the edges and from the ground underneath) works good, Dark tiles help.

I did this reasearch a few years back and all I can tell you is that goverment has a websit that will tell you the angle and direction for any place in the USA. I was surching passive solar home on google and It poped up in quite a few places.

I live in SE MN and other books that I red Say some where near 50 deg to 60 deg and the collector I'm building is set at 55 deg. mine is 6'X16' but it is going out in front of the house. Because I can always modify it if need be. And it is not attached to my house for summer removal.

The page shown was for solar/water heat. Would the desired angle of 40 be the same as for heating air? I don't believe that they were mounted anywhere close to a 40 degree angle on Dad's roof.The top edge of the panels were still well over my head before we removed them. At 45 degrees, wouldn't an 8 foot panel be only 4 feet high at the top? I will try to reconstruct the framework to determine the amount of tilt, but it wasn't much more than two feet. The framework isn't very likely to be able to be reused. Thank you. SDE

If I did my math right, an 8' panel (hypotenuse), set at 45 degrees, would have a 5'-8" vertical leg.

8' / cos(45) = 5'-8"

Nope.

If SDE gave us the roof pitch, I must have missed it.

I was/am referring to the "general" case, noting that an 8' hypotenuse does NOT give a 4' leg, at least for a right triangle.
