OT Wiring 3 wire lower water tank element

I just purchased a nearly new 66 gallon water heater for my shop. The upper element is 3800 watt (220 volt) and the bottom is 3800 OR 5500 depending upon which way you connect the 3 terminals. Connect only 2 in the normal way and you have a 3800 watt element. Connect the 3rd terminal to the "buss bar" and it becomes a 5500 watt element. The circuit tester shows continuity between any of the 3 to any other one. HELP! What is this mysterious buss bar that I need to connect to make it a 5500 watt element? Thanks as always for the help from board members.

Usually terminal 1 is common to elements 2 and 3. For low power - Power is between term 1 and 2. The bus bar connects terms 2 and 3 to parallel both elements for high power.

So if I'm reading this correctly, all I have to do is hook #1 to one live wire, and #2 and #3 to the other live wire. Is this right? Please pardon my ignorance - I'm not really stupid, but sometimes a 2x4 across the brow early on helps the entire situation become clear.

That is correct for the 5500 elements.
