Gentlemen, here�s the update on my plane. People told me to trash it and cut my losses, others said it was probably alright. It seemed to me that the only way to make a decision was to know what happened for sure. The only way to do that was to have it tested as some suggested. I just got back and unloaded the plane. I brought it to a company called Lawrence Ripak Co., Inc. http://www.ripak.com/contact.html They do all kinds of aerospace testing. They were testing F18 machined bulkheads while we were there. A great company, they took me in right away. The cost was $450.00. They did a conductivity test on the skins and spar to test for temper. We tested every few inches in areas I was worried about. Everything came up unchanged from the factory sample I provided. Now I can clean up and fix up the plane without worrying whether or not it�s ok. Thanks to all for the input and ideas. I have some Pictures before and after the fire.

Is that a T-18? , I am not schooled, or an RV? It's all metal , right?
Looks like a nice resto project...are you the builder? It will take a little more time than most people say, new instruments? all new hoses, new paint, canopy, seats, tires and tubes,cable pulleys, might want to check into a corrosion control since there is some ashes floating around in the nooks and crannys Sure would make it like new again!

Yes, it's all metal, an RV-6. It's a kit that I built over the last 9 years. It was ready to fly and got caught in a hanger fire. I've got it home and almost completely apart. I'm cleaning and inspecting everything. I think The instruments are ok. All hoses and tubing inside the cowl are ok, just dirty. The main thing is smoke and corrosion. I will completely dismantal clean and re-prime and paint everything. A new canopy is on the way as is the cowling and wing tips. Like you say I'm worried about corrosion. I will pressure wash all seams really good before repainting. All my wiring connections need to be redone. Luckily they are long enough to cut the crimps off and put on new ones. I'm replacing all nuts and bolts. I may lose some electrics or electronics. I'll see as I go. I'm really hoping to bring it out next spring.

Glad to hear you got it tested with no guessing. It doesn't look as bad as I was imagining. Aircraft fuel can get things hot fast and I was thinking worse and have seen worse. FD getting there fast saved it I'm sure. Test was a bargain for sure.

The photos just make me sick....but it sounds like you might be able to fix the problems and eventually fly that bird. What a shame after all that work. Good luck!

Congrats Richard, I know you are feeling on top of the world about now! $450 WELL spent for sure! Without that testing, I'd have stuck to my guns about never flying it, though. Glad things worked out the way they did, and thanks for reporting back.

My hat"s off to you by taking the time and expense to get a qualified lab to conduct the proper testing. Will they give you a certification that it still conforms to factory standards? This may come in handy with the insurance company and other interested parties.

Thats great. I too imagined the worst case.

Having it tested and certified as safe is the only way to go. I'm also glad that they signed off on testing.

Don't forget the logbook entries of what was done.

Ouch! Boy that hurts to look at! If that is a wooden prop and it's still ok it seems the rest should be also. It doesn't take much heat to sofften plexyglass. Did it have fuel in it. If so you're lucky the whole thing didn't go up.
