Info on magneto tester

I came across an old magneto tester at a flea market and was curious enough to buy it. There is no name but under the wooden top plate is the number 438. It apparently used two batterys about 7" long and 3" thick. No meters, has a coil and vibrator on top. Anyone have any info or experience with a tester like this? Steve

You sure it's a magneto tester? I've had several - most were made by Eiseman. They all had an electric motor to spin the magneto for testing - and no vibrator. By a vibrator - I suppose you mean something like used in the Ford Model T coils?

No, I'm not sure of it's purpose. The vibrator is like the ford coil. The only directions say "Directions for Portable Double Cell Faradic Battery". You can select current from one or both (series) batterys, and there is a knob on opposite end of coil from vibrator that's supposed to pull out to adjust the vibrator speed but it's stuck. There are leads to connect to (whatever) and a current reverser. Could this be a magnet recharger? tnx, Steve

A magnet charger wouldn't have the vibrator.

A quick GOOGLE search turned up two defintions for "Portable Double Cell Faradic Battery"...

Some sort of device used in the telegraph industry..... and a "quack medical device".

Below is a link to an ebay auction. Read the "description" section... it specifically refers to "Portable Double Cell Faradic Battery", and is a collectable quack medical device... your's look anything like the unit in the auction?

Bob, that's exactly what I have. My mind is always thinking tractors so I was fooled on this, plus the fact that the seller had an old ad for a magneto tester (not this item) in the box. As they say, one born every minute. thanks, Steve
