I have a 5 or 6 year old Cambel Hasfield compressor that has always worked stellar. It is the little 20 gallon one , lays down wit hthe Doer electric motor. It just started today, dragging to start. It will trip the breaker if you let it keep dragging. It has two capacitors on the motor. I took them both off and loaded them with a burst of 110V and discharged them with a short. They both check good. I took the end off tyhe motor and cleaned the points on the switch. THE THING STILL DRAGS and will trip the breaker, i tried it on 3 different circuits and breakers. What to look at next? by hand the compressor turns pretty hard but i never tried it before to compare it to Now. Any advice will be appreciated.

The bleed off/unloader valve does just that.
Did you try pulling the belt off and seeing if the motor starts and runs?(also check to see if motor turns freely by hand) If it does, start the motor briefly and shut it down. Listen for the starter winding switch to kick in just as the motor stops turning. If all is OK, I'd start looking at the pump.

larry,
I did pull the belt off and the motor does start and run like a banshee with no load. I also did drail the air completely and still had to help the pulley get going by hand turning the pump. It did and fully filed the tank and I heard the hiss as the valve dumped the head pressure. How should I check the motor to see if it is pulling hard enough? how should I check the compressor? Like I sad it is 5-6 years old and I have kept it serviced and in the shop. Man, it is too good to scrap. THANKS GUYS

When the pump shuts off, the air pressure on the head should be relieved by the pressure switch, with a loud hiss as it shuts off. If you interrupt the power prior to normal shutdown the switch will not bleed the pressure off and the next start will be againist pressure and won't get going.

There should be a manual pressure release on the pressure switch, either a button or the auto/off lever will do this if on the pressure switch, by moving it to off.

Bearing in the motor may need lubed up. Don't know if it has a place to lube the bearings but thats what it sounds like the problem could be

I am dumb as a box of rocks about this....

Is it bleeding off the pressure to the pump like it is supposed to, the bleeder valve so it starts under no pressure?
