Ok guys I've got one for you. I've got a kit plane I'm building, an RV-6. It was done and out at the airport waiting for it's final inspection. This after 9 years in the works. We had a fire at the hanger. A moped with a shorted out battery went up in flames. It took out a few things and damaged my plane. Mostly smoke damage which I can clean up. It's a low wing all aluminum plane. I'm concerned about the aluminum skins. The windshield is plexi glass and it softened and saged in. The cowling is a honeycombed fiberglass and it bubbled slightly on the top. My wing tip lights have plexi lenses, they saged. Suppossidly plexiglass melts at 200 degrees. My question is would that kind of heat on the 2024-T3 skins for about 10 minutes change the temper? The aircraft kit manufacturer is staying as far away as they can. Any suggestions or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

A different perspective for you to consider. What color was the aluminum painted or was it bare? I am betting the plexi distorted from the radiant energy, which built up behind the transparent enclosure. I am also betting the aluminum did not as hot because it was reflecting the radiant load.

Giving advice regarding aircraft is a tricky business because of all the regulations and danger involved with flying an aircraft. If a wing fails it's a long way down that you may not survive.

I understand your perspective that the plane is safe and might agree with you if we were talking about a farm implement going 5 mph, but it's an airplane and we really don't if it's safe or not.

Unfortunatly advice like this could kill someone.

That is a heart breaker. I am a commercial/Pitts pilot and have been involved with a few homebuilts. Like building the airplane, I would be thorough and diligent in researching this issue. I would gather a bunch of opinions and I would rely on scientific testing rather than the gut feel of even the experts.

I would approach my inspector after I had built a case one way or the other.

Given the length of the fire, I would be very suspect if the worst case scenario is any more than certain skins need to be replaced. I know that is bad outcome, but not as bad as totalling the machine.

Life is about managing risks - ya don't want to take unnecessary ones, but we are all heading west at some point.

There are aerospace companies that do non destructive testing. I'm bringing it to one on Monday. I'm having the wing skins spares and fuse and tail feathers checked. The tops first, if we find anything out of spec we'll go further. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Good luck with your tests. I certainly hope you don't have scrap or rebuild your plane at this point. Let us know how it turns out.

I'm interested in how they do the tests. I'm guessing that they use some sort of eddy current instrument, since directly measuring conductivity would require puncturing the paint and cladding.

Despite the various posts to the contrary, I am optimistic about the outcome. Aluminum is such a good conductor of heat that I doubt the aircraft got that hot. (The cowling, being fiberglass, couldn't dissipate the heat. And plexiglass doesn't have to get very hot at all to distort.)

I did a little research and found that the standard for testing the temper of aluminum alloys is conductivity, not hardness. The resistivity of 2024 in the "0" (annealed) state is 3.4x10-8 ohms per meter, while 2024-T3 is around 5.3x10-8 ohms/meter.

I don't know anything about materials testing, but I'm pretty sure this would effectively be a destructive test: The part under test would have to be stripped of its coatings and (more importantly) its pure aluminum cladding.

Is there perhaps an inspection plate you could sacrifice in the area you suspect is damaged? Or perhaps one of the wing skins. It seems to me that it would be worthwhile to ship it off to a testing lab. You might not get a conclusive result, but if the lab says the part is still at T3 you could decide then what other testing you want to do. If, on the other hand, the part fails, then you should seriously consider scrapping the airframe.

Have you considered static load testing the aircraft? You know, build a fixture so you can invert the aircraft. Put jack stands under the wings, set sand bags on the wings with weight equal to max gross times max plus Gs, then take the stands out from under the wings. Either the wings support the weight or they fail.

A static load test is the only way to know if the spars have weakened. Even if you reskin the aircraft, you could have structural members that are annealed. Of course, load testing the wings won't ensure that the empennage hasn't been affected.

Personally, I'd rather collect the insurance, assuming it's insured.

Did you come to a tractor site because you thought you might get a different answer than Van's Aircraft gave you?

Dont get all depressed about advice you got on an antique tractor site.You are only concerned if the heat changed the temper of the aluminum and if so what did it likely change to.[Aluminum temper also changes naturaly as it ages]It does not sound to me like things got that hot.T3 temper has a reason for its use in this case and what is it? stiffness? resistance to bending?I dont know and am only a weldor and only on certain jobs.I would certainly not trash can nine years work on web advice from guys [some very expert even with aircraft credentials]who have not even seen it.Take a piece to a lab or something.Wear a parachute.Ask a metalurgist to examine it.Dont think its over yet.These guys are pessimests.If it turns out to be ruined make it a realy cool motorcycle put half naked ladies in it and ride it around at bikeweek or something.Your not defeated yet on this one.Cheer up.Oh and dont listen to any John Denver music either.

It's hard to tell and figure what the heat load was and how hot it got. What does the hanger building frame or skin look like? How long did it burn? You can figure everything in that hanger stall expanded and contracted and structural integritity of all materials has been affected by too much heat. Not worth betting your life on for sure.

The "at the museum" in my handle refers to the Southern Museum of Flight, where, amongst 100 other things, I am also active in the restoration department. Add to that I am a PVT/SEL/INST and AGI.

You don't want to hear this, but I think you have absolutely NO WAY to know how hot the skin of that plane got, much less the internal structure. If it got over 200degrees, you could end up with am annealed condition O airframe or somewhere in between, which would be like flying a wet noodle. First load would result in permanent deformation of the airframe, knocking everything out of alignment. Whatever pitch, yaw or roll set the wings, tail or horizontal took would be there, all the way to the ground. I may be fine or it may not, are you willing to bet your life on it?

I do hope you had Hull insurance because this is the time to call it up. That's just an absolute crying shame.

I'm an A&P and couldn't agree more with Mike.

From what you given us the plain has been essentially in an oven for at least 10 minutes at a temperature between the melting point of plastic with some parts at the and bubbling point of paint but less than the melting point of aluminum.

I've heard some concerns about power coating aluminum and that the temp required to bake in the powder coating could change the temper of aluminum. In this situation I would think you exceeded that temp on some part of the plane. The problem is how do you physically test an entire plane like this to insure it's safe. I wouldn't rely on one part being a representative sample. Cowling at 500, wing tip at 200 unpainted surfaces at 900, who knows.

You might want to ask the guy that was about to inspect the plane for airworthiness and get his read. He is on site and can guide you better.

Oh, did the plane get wet - sprinklers, fire hose or hit with CO2. If it did it instantly qot quenched and the aluminm is annealed.

I would not touch this with the proverbial "ten foot pole". With enough heat to sag the plexiglass or bubble the fiberglass, the hardness, or temper (the T3 in 2024-T3) is probably affected. It is possible to do hardness tests to determine if the metal is still within specs, but I'll bet it no longer is.

Advisory Circular 43.13-1A, Chapt 2, Para 98 c. says "Reheating of 2017 and 2024 alloys at temperatures above that of boiling water after heat treatment, and the baking of primers at temperatures above that of boiling water, will no be considered aceptable without subsequent complete and correct heat treatment, as such practice tends to impair the oirginal heat treatment."

Many steel parts inside the airplane, such as rudder bars, hinge fittings, etc are probably still useful, and I would bite the bullet, strip if of all reusable parts, and scrap the aluminum structure.

I don't think I was above boiling water. Primer on the plane is fine. Dirty but not effected. The plexi supposidly melts at 200 degrees. I don't know if that's melt into a puddle or just get soft. But it only got soft and saged. I was thinking of getting a hardness tester and going around the structure and testing areas I can get to.

not sure if it hurt the integrity or not. since its your life at stake i would have it x-rayed. it will cost a little but not near what your worth to the family, and the 9 years of labor

X-ray won't help you. What you need is a temper inspection with hardness & eddy-current testing.
Trust me, I worked with & taught non-de-structive testing for many years at the Boeing Co.
Check around your area for NDT labs.

None Destructive Testing. If the paint has seen enough heat to soften, bubble or dis-colour anywhere. And I mean anywhere. The plane requires a fresh set of skins, no questions asked.
