Just bought myself a small lathe today. One of the 7x12 models similar to what Harbor Freight and Nothern tool offer. Went to a tool show looking for something else and they had the lathes for $299, couldn't resist. Only problem I've never used a lathe before and would like to find some good books and WEB sites to pick up tips on and how to use one properly. The reason I want'd one is I'd like to start trying to make some of the miniature steam engines I've seen as well as Sterling engines. Any good WEB sites to go for for this information? How about recommended books?

Thanks.
Bill

Try this link. I ordered the South Bend book directly from the company. It's very well written.

South Bend Tool Co. (out of business) printed a booklet: How To Run a Lathe. I suspect the library will have similar books. The main thing I learned in apprentiship is "you never know enough". 40 years later, I'm still learning; and a retired toolmaker. Good luck and enjoy!

fine Lindsay on the internet or in a magazine and get therir catalog.Lots of books on machine tool work. Also for model engines check out The Home Shop Machinist, ant the other magazines they put out. There is a lot there. I f youcan't find any of these get back to me and I can forward the e mail addresses to you. I think a search will find them though.
