Princess Auto had these motors on sale for $133 CDN a couple of weeks ago and I couldn't resist.

Unfortunately my MTD rear-tine tiller has a two-driveshaft Techumseh, so the intended swap was out. I fixed the recoil start on the Techumseh, instead.

The new motor runs so nicely (just like a Honda)I didn't want to give it back, so I tore into my old Toro snowblower, and now it sports a 6.5 General instead of the original 5 hp Techumseh. The swap went quite easily once I bought 3/4" pulleys and figured out how to wire the interlocks to the kill switch on the motor.

Has anyone else had a chance to play with one of these motors?

I know a mill or lathe does not know if the guy cranking the handles is Chinese or American,Canadian,or Mexican. So if he knows how to do that well then the next thing is the quality of the steel and other materials.I can tell some things arent equal when I grind them and check the color of the sparks; But when someone in China figures that out[and they have already started to]the exact same item could be made in either country and be of the same quality.Im not saying its equal just yet but its on the way pretty quick. When American manufacturers have the Chinese make the product and specify exactly what to do [material ,heat treat etc.]and correct them on mistakes[quality control] then there will be no difference between products.Just hope we never have a war with them when that happens.

You'll just be throwing those engines away when something goes wrong and find no parts and no warrranty for them. That was enough to keep me from buying some last year.

They are a chinease copy of a Honda. A friend of mine was told to just buy Honda parts when he needed some, problem is the Honda part doesn't fit, so he's stuck!

This is one of those times when you get what you pay for!

The kids have a Princess Auto 6.5HP Chinese clone on thier go-cart along with the Comet torque convertor. Speed limiter type primary spring equiped. They run the thing wide open over hill and dale. When they arn't sitting on the driveway then flooring it, tears up a couple of good ruts doing that. Don't know how many hundreds or thousands of hours it would do running a generator at full power etc. For a el-cheapo motor it seems ok. Nicest starting/idling engine on the place incluiding the van and truck.

I'll be interested to hear of your experiences Rod. I have seen a lot of stuff at Princess Auto with these motors on them. If they are anything like their compressors, you might have a bit of a wait on your hands for parts. A guy came through the shop one day with a PA compressor that he had tipped over and broke the flywheel off of. They said it would be 8 weeks to get a new one. I like P.A. for their eclectic mix of parts and tools and surplus items, but I have never been a big fan of any of their power tools, although I did buy a cheap $20 angle grinder there a few years ago. If you look closely, you will often see tools that are identical to Mastercraft tools from Canadian Tire, without the logo.

I have seen and company I work for uses many of them. My boss told me (dont know where he heard it) that those cheap chinese knockoffs are either made of inferrior parts or some are even honda rejects that are jsut sligtly off or slightly out of spec. While never having any catastrophic failures on any of them (rod break block etc) The others seem tohave alot of scattered problems ie ignition modules, carb problems, typical cheap plastic parts breaking etc etc. W e havent run any of them a great number of hours (ie rototillers) but as i say them seem to work but have minor tweaks and issues to work with.

Hi Hobo,

There are lots of them for sale on eBay; seem to be a handful of dealers selling them new there, too.

All the best, Stan
