I've got what is probably a small rat coming into my house at night or when nobody is home. It ignores the live-catch traps I've baited for it, so now it's time to go to plan B. I'm not completely satisfied with standard rat traps because I've had badly injured rats (judging by the amount of blood) get out of them and go somewhere else to die.

It seems like there were descriptions of rat or mouse drowning traps on this forum within the last year; one had a rolling walkway across the top of a 5 gal bucket, but there were a couple of improved features that I can't remember now. Anyone built and used one of these, or similar?

Has anyone ever built a house current rat electrocuter? I made one about 30 years ago where a piece of metal mesh was attached to the neutral side of an electrical cord and the bait was wired to the hot side, dangling above the mesh. After I built it, I decided not to use it and took it back apart. What kind of practical problems might I run into with such a device? Assume that it will be in a locked room that only the rat or I can enter, and that it's constructed in such a way that no short circuit can occur except through the rat. Please, no warnings about the inherent unsafeness of such a device. I'm asking for information about specific dangers, not lifestyle advice. I don't use tabacco or alcohol, and I don't offer unsolicited advice about their dangers to adults who choose to use them.

I have used can with both ends in insted of a pipe and peanut butter for bait, anit-freeze slows down the rotting of mice and rats where water stinks in a day or two,You hair triger the mouse traps and put the peanut butter under the trigger and when the no good even thinks of stealing the bait it goes off, a little hard to set but i sure can smile and giggle just thinking what will happen to Mr Mouse

I drill very small holes in kernels of corn and wire them to the trap. Put 2 or 3 kernels along side of the trap. You might want to use a #1 or #1 1/2 steel trap instead of regular rat traps.

for the smart mouse, my wife started super gluing bird seed onto the trap trigger. doesn't lick off.
works like a charm!

Regarding the 120 volt trap, I'd be a little concerned about starting a fire as the rat dried out and turned to jerky. And as someone else mentioned, fried rat probably smells pretty bad.

Hi Stan,

Ya we had some summer visitors that we can't get rid of. They all showed up in one day. What a PITA to deal with. I caught three with normal bait traps. I now have 3? more that are smart mices. They lick the bait clean and polish the trap tang without ever tripping a trap.

I got 2 more by setting a series of traps in a row where there trail was. Caught both of them by the legs. So now I have one 3 legged mouse that you think would be a easy catch. Ya right!

For the past 2 weeks none of my tricks are working so I bought 6 electronic replers. I've never used any before so we'll see how it goes. There supposed to use ultrasonic waves to drive them away in 2wks. Were 3days into the testing.

It appears were making progress as I have not seen them since activating them where as before I seen them every night.

Hi Ken,

The ultrasonic device sounds interesting. Do you have dogs or (non-performing) cats in the house? I wouldn't want my dogs to walk around shaking their heads, wondering what was that ringing in their ears.

Hi Stan,

According to the package, the sound waves only bother the rodents, mice, rats, rabbits, girbils and hamsters.

Our dogs, Labs, are not bothered by the waves.

The packaging specific states does NOT bother dogs, cats or birds. And my part I like best, 90day money-back. I bought them at Gemplers, 3 for $39

Have had real good luck with the 5 gal bucket and a board. Use whatever it is they are getting into for bait. Had one getting in the wild bird seed. Put a little seed in the bottom of a 5gal bucket and a board making a nice little ramp up to the edge. Ran out to the store right quick and returned to find him looking up at me within 15 mins.

As for the standard mouse/rat traps, I had one smart@$$ rat that kept robbing the trap. He'd trip it and then eat the bait. I reached my limit when he got into the drawer and ate my Little Debbie Oatmeal Creme Pies (capital rodent offense). I put the trap, loaded with a taste of OCP IN the empty box... one way in and it was not the safe route. Had him in fifteeen minutes also. He was not injured, nor did he steal the bait this time. Perfect kill as he was head-on in the trap.

This might sound cruel, but an old boss of mine had the same problem with a rat big enough to pull itself out of a trap. They stuck some very heavy tacks up through the bottom of the trap. It didn't get away anymore.

Years ago I heard about a guy running a garage with a mouse/rat problem . Somehow, he heard/found out mice/rats can't burp!! At closing time he'd leave out several shallow pans of Coke/Pepsi for the little critters !! The next morning he had all the dead exploded/imploded? rodents he could stand! Anybody out there ever tried this?

Colas work on rats no luck with mice. Have to be sugar type not diet. Generic brands cheap enough and work. Not uncommon to find an empty pan in the morning too many rats drinking it. Fill shallow pan every day at dusk throw out old or you lose the fizz too quick. May take a couple of days for them to find it. Used to use in grainery where we didn"t want poison.

A couple years back, after reading about it in several places, I built one of those "drowning" traps. 5 gallon bucket with enough water in the bottom to drown whatever and a can with a peice of wire through it so it'd roll accross the top. Had a board leading to the top of the bucket, smeared peanut butter on the can, even stuck some grain the mice had been eating in the peanut butter. Maybe I did something wrong, but in about a year's time with this contraption placed in a small room where I'd see lots of mice every time I walked in, it had a grand total of one dead mouse in it. Don't know- maybe they just weren't hungry enough to walk up that board to the top of the bucket?

I tried electrocuting mice back about 1968. Didn't work. Later I learned that rodents can't be put into fibrillation by shock and that's the easiest way to kill electrically. Otherwise the shock has to literally fry them and 1000 volts wasn't enough to do in a mouse in the lab.

1000V ACor DC? Hard to belive AC won't kill a rat. The problem I see with line current would be a dead rat laying on the wires being smoked. There is a smell you wouldn't want in the house.

Five gallon plastic or steel bucket with a board leading up to the top. Hole through both sides of bucket with metal rod through both holes. Plastic or copper pipe slip fit on the rod with peanut butter on the middle of the pipe. Water in the bottom of the bucket for the rat to drown in.
