I need to rebuild an aluminum body carburator and need the get a bucket of soaking agent. The old carb soak buckets with methylene chloride are not available these days. So I need to get something else. What works best and is available (legally)?

if you only have one carb to do ,,and not much use for cleaner after that hwy not try to find a shop that has carb cleaner .I get a few customers that bring carbs in for me to clean. Eliminates buying cleaner and worrying about getting rid of it . I use combo of spray cans , and then dipping in Chemtrol ? 5 gal from parts store . Not near as good as what it used to be .For some stubborn stuff i have used murruic acid or even CLR work great on rust or deposits in carb , beware it will change the finish and coloration of the carb , but works great otherwise .

All I use is some denatured alcohol or E85 gas in a metal coffee can with the plastic lid. I use a smaller plastic container for all the internal parts. Then i just blow it dry with compressed air. I also use some monofilament fishing line or weed trimmer line to check the passages.

Chemtool chem dip.. something like that.. it comes in a gallon can.. has a strainer pail in the bucket.. has a liquid barrier on top to help prevent evaporation.

I've used this to soak and clean a zenith carb on my 66 IH cub. Works great.. takes paint and all off.

Eats skin too!

Hi Steve,

I second the ChemTool Berryman B12 carb cleaner. Wow great stuff and fast. Any auto parts store.

I use the cheapest spray brake cleaner to pre-clean the outside then soak in the B12 as it makes it last longer.

Steve,
depending on what brand of aluminum carb you have would make a differance if you want use a commerical carb cleaner on it. Aluminum itself is a porous metal and most aluminum carbs are sealed at the factory and if you use a commercial cleaner on them, it can take the coating off the carb, they can start leaking air through the body of the carb and then the carb can be ruined. This is from a small engine for alwnmower manufacturers telling me that, but it is something to consider.

Go to your NAPA store and get a one gallon can of either NAPA brand or MACS carb cleaner. The older, tin 3# coffee cans work good as buckets. You might need to use two cans, put the carb bottom in one can and top in another, and then pour in the carb cleaner until the parts are covered. The carb cleaner available today is pretty wimpy compared to the older stuff, so when I remove the parts from the cleaner, I like to immerse them into very hot water, and then blow them dry. I have also found that a follow up with some aerosol carb cleaner will ensure that all passages are clean. I use the cheap Wal-Mart spray cleaner.
