Ridge Vent AND Metal Vents?

If the forcast is good, I'm tearing the shingles off my house Sunday. In re-roofing, I plan on having a ridge vent. I would like to remove/fill in my metal vents. The gables are each vented. Any of you removed your metal vents and wished you hadn't?

The open ridge vents will allow snow in if there isn't adequate soffit ventilation. You want the air to come in the soffits and out the ridge. The minimum soffit area required per foot was stamped right in the ridge vent I used. I've never had snow pile up inside, or water leak in.

Leroy, your problem may have been faulty installation. I have done a few of these and never heard of a problem like that.
there is more than one type ridge vent and if installed with-out the foam strips(metal ridge) i can see how snow would blow under the ridge. but with a composite shingle there is a mesh the underlays the ridge shingle, i dont see how snow could filtrate this. anyway the local lumber yard would be able to help with the proper vent for roof pitch and climate, etc. jcee

you would have to back the plywood patch or sheathing,(2 edges)with 1x4,then use screws to fasten the patch where the roof vent holes are. when installing the ridge vent you will need to rip a 1"(if i remember correctly) strip along both sides of the ridge. like woodbutcher says don't cover any soffit vents or gable vents, theses allow moisture to evacuate the attic space. in damp climates, without adequate venting, mold will grow on the underside of the sheathing, and will cause sheathing to rot. also check that no insulation is blocking the air flow @ soffitt and ridge. they make a foam board that allows soffitt to vent, it is installed between the rafters on the underside of the sheathing, @ soffit vent, where the soffit joins the wall and extends about 3' so the insulation will not block air flow. if the ceiling is vaulted i would leave the roof vents where they are, even though they are unsightly. hope it helps, jcee ex-carpenter

All I know is that when we added on several years ago we put in the ridge vent and it was supposed to keep the snow out BUT in DID NOT, we had 2 feet of snow in atic on top of insulation. Out came that ridge vent and closed it up tight with the shingles like I should have in the first place. Never a problem after and the house I live in now never had any vents and I would NEVER put in vents in any house I might ever build. Can see no good in them, only the bad.

Glenn,
If the metal vents you're talking about are in the soffit, they are there to allow air to move up into the attic. Without them, the ridge vents won't work as well as they can with them, even with gable vents. Butch
