Metabo.....I've got a Makita , Porter Cable , and Metabo..There's no comparison..Problem , I heard from the local hardware guy that Metabo pulled out of the United States..I don't know if there's any truth to it but , seems to be a good time to get a spare..My Metabo is an expensive model that speeds up when I'm hogging with it , then slows back down when the load is taken away..It's slick...

I would agree that the metabo is very good. Using it fairly hard for steel grinding and also with wire wheel and it is a tough one.

My "new" job (been there one year yesterday) involves a LOT of metal fabrication. I use a grinder serveral times a day, sometimes for several hours at a time.

I personally have a Milwaukee and a Makita, and there are several Hitachis in the shop. We've gotten good service under tough conditions out of all of them.

Personal notes:

I don't care for the paddle switch on the Hitachi, it locks on every time you depress it and you have to move a slide latch to turn it off. Some folks in the shop like that feature, I don't.

Between the Milwaukee and the Makita, the Makita seems to tolerate long, heavy loads better than the Milwaukee without getting excessively hot or noisy. The Milwaukee does the job, but the gearbox gets hot quick, and once the lube thins out, there's a lot of gear noise.

Milwaukee, no doubt in my mind the absolute toughest grinder available. I have used some dewalts and makitas, but the milwaukees will hold up. My dad has some stuff that is almost 20 years old that are still going strong. Although two years ago he had to replace 2 of our little milwaukees that were almost 20 years old. I am 24 and I have grown up with them.

in sticks, I must respectfully disagree with John T.
I have a Makita, Love it! one can't run fast enough to GIVE Me a Dewalt, which is just a yellow cased Black & Decker.
Later,
John A.

I have a Makita which seems fine, but believe a Dewalt to be the better.

Like the other post said, I've heard Metabo is a good one. Personally I've got an older Dewalt, and a fairely new Bosch and both of them seem to take the use and abuse pretty good also. Dad bought a Skil, that was on sale cheap, not to long ago to use in the shop as a back up...I believe it lasted 10 or so hours before it died. One thing I can say though they gave us a new one under warranty. Thing is the Skill is considered a "homeowner" type unit and is only rated for so many hours use. While a typical homeowner might not use it but 10 hours in 10 years in a more "commercial" applicatrion it might see that much in a couple of days. Just watch out for things like that before you decide on a particular brand.

I'll second the Metabo nomination. I bought a used 4 1/1" model off ebay a couple years ago for $35 with two new wheels and it puts any other brand I've used to shame. The guy I bought mine from bought two new ones to use in his fabrication shop but they lasted so much longer than the brands he used before that he sold the one he was keeping for a backup.
