Power Washer Engine Seems Frozen

Dad borrowed powerwasher and when I got it back I fired it up and let it run for about 60 seconds with water going to it. Usually takes a bit to build up its pressure.

When I went to use it, it worked for about 30 seconds and then stopped very abruptly.

I went to pull the starter cord and it would not budge. I pulled the oil dipstick and smoke came billowing out, but it appeared to have had some oil in it.

This is a pretty decent powerwasher with a honda engine in it.

Anything I should look at before I just buy a replacement engine? Replacements are less than $200 and I am only moderately mechanically inclined. Bringing it to a shop would cost me $70 just to walk in the door.

What are descibing could be the unloader is stuck. This thing will unload pressure if your pressure gets too high and these little presure washers are prone to getting all corroded inside and casuing this kind of problem. They are made out of cheap aluminum, where the higher quality ones have a lot of brass in them so they do not corrode. As others have said, seperate the washer from the engine, then find out what one is bad, most of the time the replacement pump or replacement engine is 3/4 of the price you paid for the pressure washer. We put $200.00 pumps on $300.00 pressure washers all the time under warranty, and normally the bill, wiht a new pump and labor, is for at least 80% of what it sold for new, but it is warranty, so we fix it and send the claim in to the manufacturer.

If the relief valve does not operate on the pump, this will happen. The pressure backs up in the pump and locks it up and therefore the motor is locked too. Back off the pressure setting until you can vent the pump, then find out what is wrong with the relief. A little corrosion, dirty water, heck anything can cause this... Hope this is all thats wrong, Aaron

Take the plug out and see if it will turn freely. Next thing I would do is disconnect the pump from the engine. See if the engine turns over then. If so, you may be looking at a new pump instead of the motor.

So far as a new motor, it"s your dollar.

Had same problem with power washer and I thought motor was locked up.But it was the pump instead of motor. Put some oil in pump and turn it with a wrench, worth a try before buying a new motor
