Hilti TPS anti theft

According to Hilti literature the theft protection system activates when the tool is unplugged ftom the power source by a thief and won't start after 20 minutes have elapsed.
How does the tool know it's being stolen? I bought a demo hammer on Craigs List and it seems to run OK. It was purchased used by the seller. Why isn't the TPS working? Is there a key of some sort? Will the TPS someday stop the tool? What gives? Thanks

Had not heard of this system either so I had to go look. Might help on the theft problem. As far as your tool goes I would guess if it still works it will keep working. Must not have had the system activated.

Cris, thanks for linking the site on the Hilti TPS. I have no idea what the "Company Card" is or it's purpose. I would think the tool has to be activated before it is first used after purchase. Or does it? Maybe the owner has the choice to not activate it. If it is activated, then when it's unplugged and stored overnight or the weekend, it should need to be activated again. What if the employee looses the key? What if he has the key in his pocket and calls in sick on Monday morning? Are there extra keys? So many questions, so few answers.

Hi Chris,

As an anti-theft system it seems pretty lame to me; nobody knows about it and the tool doesn't have an obvious warning about it. What thieves is it supposed to deter, Hilti engineers? Or is the idea that after the thief discovers that the tool is of no use to him, he'll put it back where he found it? As a strategy it reminds me of a hidden fake security camera.

What I don't know about is thieves, and maybe Hilti does. Maybe the person most likely to walk off with a tool from a jobsite is someone who would have reason to be aware of the system, like a co-worker. Is that who normally steals tools? I haven't worked on enough large jobsites to have a feeling for that.

All the best, Stan

Around here, Pennsylvania and other places, most of the tool thefts are done in the wee hours. They break into tool trailers, job sites, any place where tools are stored overnight! I would think, if i heard any kind of noises on a daytime job site, after working hours, i'd call the cops. but some who live nearby have larcenous traits, and figure they don't need trouble!
