Dropping off the garbage...

Someone else was dropping off a pressure washer...

"What's wrong with it?"

"Ah, it doesn't shut off anymore. You have to pull the wire off the spark plug."

Well that went in the back of my pickup truck.

Granted, it's a cheap little Campbell Hausfeld with a Briggs engine, 1500psi. But I've never quite been able to justify the money for a little electric one never mind a gas one ;)

Second pull, she coughed to life. Ran for a few minutes and built pressure nicely...acting up now but I think it may be the spark plug wire, seems if I jiggle it right I can get the engine to pop. So I'll throw it on the bench tomorrow when it's raining and see if I can verify my theory.

Had a mouse nest in by the plug wire, plus if they had been pulling on it to turn the machine off, I'm hoping it's just simple a frayed wire.

way to go! I lived in Mansfield CT for about 14 yrs. Found tons of good stuff there. They had a "re-use" shed that contained usable, unwanted stuff. Best time of year was when UConn students went home for the summer. They'd throw away great stuff trather than cart it home to mom 'n dad.

Our local landfill has a huge reuse building. You take it in one side, and they take it out to the 3 sided lean to on the other side. I know they check to make sure it actually is something that can be reused, but I'm not sure if maybe they don't pocket the good stuff or sell it elsewhere. Sometimes you see the same items there again and again.

I have picked up a few things and left a few things. They do a really good job of ensureing the least amount possible goes to the landfill though. There are separate recycling containers for cans and bottle and plastic jugs, for newpapers, cardboard and oil. There is box for automotive batteries and they take household batteries too. They also have a roll off for scrap metal. The only thing more I would like to see is maybe a compost bin and a bin for plastic grocery bags. I can take those to my local grocery store though.

Here you kin not remove enny thing from a dumpster. I have got buddy/buddy with most of the guys at the dump and they will let me git a few things when no one izz around. My favorite pick up izz scrap metal angle iron etc. I pick up all the bed rails I kin git to use in the garden. I have a set I got that had a Cow bell pad locked to the rail, Hummmmm wonder why a bell had to be locked to a bed rail. I would luv to know the story behind that.

Our landfill used to let people put things by the dumpsters for others to take. No more. Now they have a security guard there to make sure nobody takes anything. Then it gets shipped off the be burned. They also have guards by the scrap metal and construction debris piles.

I used to pick up 4x4's 1 by boards and lots of 2x's. I built several cabinets, flower boxes, bird houses and feeders, saw horses and tables from land fill pillage. Now the county buries all of it.

That is so ridiculous..... ..they teach our kids about recycling in school, yet they won't allow anyone to actually recycle anything. I'm glad our dumps are wide open where I live. OTOH, not much useful ever makes the dump down in my neck of the woods. Seems everyone else there feels the same way I do.

Dump or scrap yard, both are treasure chests waiting to be plundered. Over the years Dad and I have picked up a heated water parts washing cabinet ($7 to replace start capacitor, new stainless nozzels in a 55 gal drum 10 feet away), a 8500 watt diesel generator (running and currently tied in to supply emergency power to my house), several 1/2 and 1" IR drive impacts (several dollars apiece to fix), a David Bradley tiller (combined with dad's broken one to make one), and the list goes o and on. People fuss about spending so much for various products and then turn around and throw away good stuff, then when they have to buy a new one they wonder why things cost so much...one of the reasons big companies have to charge so much to make a profit is because they throw away millions and millions of dollars of perfectly good products themselves because of minor problems that could be easily and cheaply fixed.....at least by someone that knows what their doing that is..... and then have to either buy or make more to replace the good one they threw away..... ..... .

well, I bought a generator once from a garage sale. It made a funny scraping sound when he tried to turn it over. Well, after I filled up the gas tank, and fished the dead rat out from the cooling fan, it ran just fine. I've had it for about five years now, and haven't had any more dead rats . Tom

Our local dump only allows scavenging from the metal pile. That's where all the good stuff ends up anyway ! Couple years ago, there was always some one row tractor implements on the pile. Now that I have a tractor again, I can't beg somebody to throw something like that away. I did pick up about 15 sheets of good 5-V roofing tin to go on the new horse barn last week. Also found a nice pulley for a V- belt. All I need now is an electric motor and my bench grinder will be operational. One mans trash really is another mans treasure !

Used to be in the good old days you paid your fee and drove in out of sight of the booth. People would park their vehicle, mentaly mark out a section, pull out a lawn chair and wait. When someone would dump something of value the sitter would go and retreive it. If you wandered into the area to get stuff, you would be told it was off limits. Several years later when I was throwing away junk, I looked up to see a 7 1/4" Craftsman power saw flying thru the air. The guy said it was burned out. I got it, replaced the switch and have been using it ever since, (30 years) as my favorite saw, replacing the switch one more time. Total cost for the two switches about $15. A nearby small town used to allow people to come to a pre-dump drop off site and pick out what they wanted. I got a nice Green Machine string trimmer that I still use and lots of other goodies. I think the city stopped that for fear of an injury and lawsuit

Man, that's great. Funny what folks will through away.

They give away stuff too.

I have picked a lot of treasures from Craigslist.
Look under the 'free' section on the for sale classifieds. You won't belive the items listed there!

I go to the landfill often with stuff from the construction sites. I see alot of good stuff. But the landfill geniuses watch closely and don't allow anything to be picked up.

Good luck on a good find. Free stuff is always the best.
