I'VE LOOKED AND CALLED EVERY WHERE, NO ONE WANTS TO SELL ME COAL (UNLESS I BUY 25 TON'S AND HAVE IT DELIEVERD ALL AT ONCE) BEING RIGHT OFF THE MISSISSIPPI RIVER IN MN., I SEE COAL ON THE R.R. AND IN BARGES, BUT THAT'S POWER PLANT COAL. NOW DOWN SOUTH EAST - OR JUST EAST, ONE CAN BUY COAL IN THE BAG ALL DAY LONG, BUT NO ONE WANTS TO BOTHER WITH SMALL SALES IN THE NORTH.

Thanks Leland, the coal that may be left near power plants ---Belongs to the Power Plants, around here, they clean up the coal if it's de-railed, It's best to just buy it if you can find it to buy, sure would like to live near a coal mine --- but we can't have it all and take what we get most times... I just drove down to Sandusky Ohio with my family and saw a large pile (almost the size of a mini mountain) west of Toledo, there were trains hauling it. See if a guy with a 10 yard dump truck can pick up and deliver for a price, from anywhere. Just my 2 cents.

Joe

What kind of coal are you looking for?

Blacksmith coal is a altogether different product. Usually in 50# bags. There is some sort of process that needs to be done to make it usable for a forge.

Of course Lump coal is straight out of the ground but as you know is hard to find.

Truth be told I would suggest Skie (sp?) coal and salt in Ames, IA. I have bought Lump coal for steamers at the local show there and he handles bagged forge coal also.

Another suggestion if you are fueling a steamer find a local pallet maker and arrange to get their scraps.

HTH

Blacksmith coal is really coke. It's pretty much pure carbon or charcoal. Many people with stoves and furnaces make the same stuff. They take the fuel, they cram the firebox right full and they limt the airflow to only allow a smoldering fire. This hot fuel in an oxygen deficiant atmosphere produces the gasses that would normally burn. Instead without enough oxygen they are forced up the stack instead. If the stack is cool the gasses will condense and show as creosoot.

Gerald beat me to it. I am two hours away but make it to Ames probably a dozen times a year.

Been a while since I was to Skei's but he is listed in the 2005 phone book.

Make sure you call first. I have been there when the Lump inventory was 2 or 3 ton and have seen 20 ton or better also.

He will send you to a scale on the east side of town at a salvage yard. It is a real humdinger to get to with a bigger trailer but doable. I prefered to use a scale at ISU on the North east end of campus but I don't know the name's of streets far as giving directions.

If you are after blacksmith coal might be cheaper to have him ship it to you.

good luck

jt

From Hickory Park (On Duff Ave) go north about a mile to Lincoln Way, head west about 1 mile and it is on the north side of the road just before you hit the Grand Ave. intersection. There is a Hollywood video store, Culvers restaurant, and a Carlos O'Kelly's right in front of it.

Dang....you made me hungry now.

SKIE does deliver. How far I don't know. I've never bought from them, but I did visit them once looking at their '65 vintage F-350 dump truck while I was working on fixing up a similar truck with a flat bed.

Well since i am out of the coal haulen and i realy could not tell ya where they are still mineing domestic coal and i use to live on the northern fringes of the coal fields and mined and hauled coal . But that was shortly after the dinisours went extinctand the closeing of the rubber and steel industry . Back 5 years ago it was getting real hard to find coal to heat the shop as we would go thru about 6-8 ton for the year when we first put the shop up my buddy and i had COAL buckets and we would get Free coal and when the trucks left we started to buy it by the pickup load for 10 bucks and it was good coal with low ash and real good heat the last oal i bought i had to barrow one buddys Mack tandem axel and take a truck load ended up with 17 ton at 75 dollars a ton for it and as far as i was concerned it was garbage coal lots of ash and klinkers and did not burn well at all. and had to drive and hourand a half to get it .

Just buy the truck load of coal and stockpile it, you'll get a better price per ton that way. It wont go bad sitting around, besides maybe you can sell some to other people in your area

Joe, I get coal from farrier supply houses and sometimes from fuel dealers. They usually sell it in smaller lots.
