Annoying Computer Issue

When booting up my computer, an unnecessary page comes up twice. It says Program Select a program to view it's description. And then it has a little folder icon. This page takes up about 2/3's of the screen. I X it off, and it reappears a couple seconds later. X it off again and then my computer can finish booting up. How can I remove this? It's been doing this for quite a while.

Thank you, Glenn FitzGerald

Unless you're running Windows 2000 or NT, you should be able to click on "start", "run", and type in "msconfig".

Click OK, then go into the "startup" list tab and look to see what all is being called to execute on bootup.

In your case, there probably are two identical entries which point to the same thing. You could probably safely uncheck both copies, which just keeps them from automatically loading when you boot your PC.

It doesn't delete anything. You can trim down the startup list to just essential tasks and that will help speed your PC.

There are some other places to look for malware/"helper" programs, but for what you mentioned, that would be my first stop.

There is a lot of poorly written malware floating around that can install itself more than once on a PC.

I work on them for a living and it's a constant battle.

Howard

Spybot is ok but the PC World reviews have consistently rated CounterSpy as one of the best. Spybot usually gets 70% of the trash, while CounterSpy gets more like 90%. I run CounterSpy every night and it usually gets about 15 - 20 pieces of junk. Counterspy is available from www.sunbeltsoftware.com for about $20.

I'd strongly suggest downloading Spybot S&D. Download it, install it, and run the "search for updates" feature. Then reboot your computer into "Safe Mode" and run Spybot. I recently ran across a computer that had 411 pieces of spyware on it!! Spybot removed 405 of them.

Then update your antivirus and run it from Safe Mode.

What operating system are you using? Windows XP or 98 or ME?

You could try to clear the program that is trying to start by clearing your "Startup" program list. Go to the lower left of your screen and click on "Start" then on "Programs", then on "Startup", then delete the programs that are being loaded on startup.

Download windows defender from microsoft....it's a freeware....after you get it downloaded and installed click on tools, then software explorer.....this will let you see what is starting when you boot the machine....it will then let you disable what you don't want running from startup..... .

Do like Bill says...if your computer can pass the "genuine advantasge" test thing. That is if it is legal and up to date. There is a, free I think, program called startup cop that is very handy. I highly recomend it. FWIW, I am running spybot and easy cleaner. Yesterday, easy clearer found 20 meg of old, leftover junk.
