Two days of frustration... I could browse any where but ytmag.com Though that they were down again. Hey Allan, that was the reason for my other wise stupid E-mail. Then yesterday discovered the usps.com would not come up either. Then no mapquest.com. Even though I could browse the local auctioneer, and he all ways has a map through mapquest....all Ok except no mapquest. Why was I blocked from certain sites? Same problem with a new Linus computer and laptop computer. Only thing in common was DSL modem...yep! just plugged in a new one and I am BACK. Ever try to set up a Linux computer that you know nothing about when the internet connection is playing games...don't try.

Possible cause for "lost sites" being "found" after re-booting a DSL "modem" is that the "modem" is really a router. There is a cache of known addresses in it that sometimes becomes corrupted. Re-booting clears the cache and lets it re-build. Somewhat common for a DSL line. Less common for a cable "modem" but still possible.

"modem" actually stands for MODulater-DEModulator and was a device originally used to convert digital signals coming from a serial computer interface to an analog form that a phone line could use.

just a couple more pieces of useless trivia....

I have been having the same exact problem. I couldnt get on YT or 2 other sites I go to all the time. These were the only ones that wouldnt come up. I tried everything & finally unplugged my modem for a couple minutes & let it boot back up. That fixed it. Weird

Another consideration is to delete cookies on your computer. I had a friend the other day that had trouble checking his web email but could get into other sites. We deleted all his cookies and temp internet files and now his sysem has speeded up. I have had to reset modem before also.

You may want to check out this site.Pretty helpful with all computer stuff, and has a forum just for Linux. Most of these people hang out on the Kountry Life board.

Hi Kenny,

Once when we were having days of problems with our computer shortly after getting DSL service and a new service provider, I called the service provider and was told to try rebooting the modem. The modem is rebooted by turning it off and then back on. Actually it's even easier than that for me; since it is plugged into a power strip, all I have to do is turn the power switch on the power strip off and on. This has gotten me going maybe half a dozen times in the past two years.

All the best, Stan

Thanks Stan and tanklord. It was worse that a reboot. I even set every thing to default and setup over again. the last time it was so bad that it would not even connect to internet. what got me was it worked fine most sites but not on ytmag and some others. Yes, there is a place in the setup to block some places, but these were not used, at least it said they were not used. Only explaination I have is it was blocking some. About a year ago, I though it was going out and I bought a replacement, so I had a new unit here. Dang things that work "most of the time" so you don't suspect them.

Are you running McAfee anti-virus software? I find that one to be super sensitive and an overall pain. My daughter got a brand new Dell and it wouldn"t let her on the internet at all on the 2nd day she had it. Seems that the McPain software did an auto-update and it increased the security level settings to the point that the ping that the modem got back would shut it down.

Maybe not your issue but a good chance to rant anyway. Good luck

Yea Bob. We are getting so many "fixit" and "protect us" programs on windows it will hardly run and we never know what comes next. Just heard there is a newer explorer out...again?? Sooner or later this has got to end. Thats why I am trying to learn Linux. Leave MS behind and never look back. The newer versions are not that bad to work with. Like you, a good chance to rant.
